Story Behind The Song

Released in 1984, “Since Yesterday” was Strawberry Switchblade’s best-known single and the title track from their debut album. Written by Rose McDowall and Jill Bryson, the song captured the duo’s unique blend of shimmering synth-pop, bright melodies and bittersweet lyrics. Produced by David Motion, it combined polished electronic arrangements with an infectious pop sensibility, helping Strawberry Switchblade stand out during the colourful and eclectic music scene of the mid-1980s.

The song reflects on the sudden end of a relationship, with its lyrics expressing confusion, sadness and the struggle to come to terms with unexpected heartbreak. Rose McDowall’s delicate lead vocal is complemented by Jill Bryson’s harmonies, creating a gentle yet emotionally resonant performance. Beneath the vocals, sparkling synthesisers, crisp drum machines and melodic guitar lines give the track a bright, uplifting sound that contrasts beautifully with its melancholic theme. This balance between cheerful pop and emotional vulnerability became one of the duo’s defining characteristics.

“Since Yesterday” remains the signature song of Strawberry Switchblade and perfectly captures their distinctive image and musical style. While the duo enjoyed only a brief recording career, their influence has endured, with the song continuing to be admired by fans of 1980s pop and indie music alike. Its memorable chorus, polished production and heartfelt lyrics have ensured its lasting appeal, while its unmistakable blend of sweetness and melancholy has helped it become a cult favourite. Today, “Since Yesterday” is regarded as one of the finest examples of sophisticated British synth-pop from the decade and remains an enduring reminder of the duo’s unique talent.

The song peaked at No. 05 in the UK Singles Chart on the 21st January 1985.

SONG LYRICS

Just close your eyes and then remember
The thoughts you’ve locked away
When tomorrow comes you’ll wish
You had today

And as we sit here alone
Looking for a reason to go on
It’s so clear that all we have now
Are our thoughts of yesterday

If you’re still there when it’s all over
I’m scared I’ll have to say
That a part of you has gone
Since yesterday

And as we sit here alone
Looking for a reason to go on
It’s so clear that all we have now
Are our thoughts of yesterday

La, la la la, la la la, la la la la la la
La, la la la, la la la, la la la la la la

Well, maybe this could be the ending
With nothing left of you
A hundred wishes couldn’t say
I don’t want to

And as we sit here alone
Looking for a reason to go on
It’s so clear that all we have now
Are our thoughts of yesterday

La, la la la, la la la, la la la la la la
(It’s so clear that all we have now
Are thoughts of yesterday)

La, la la la, la la la, la la la la la la
(It’s so clear that all we have now
Are thoughts of yesterday)

La, la la la, la la la, la la la la la la
(It’s so clear that all we have now
Are thoughts of yesterday)

La, la la la, la la la, la la la la la la
(It’s so clear that all we have now
Are thoughts of yesterday)

La, la la la, la la la, la la la la la la
(It’s so clear that all we have now
Are thoughts of yesterday…)
