Story Behind The Song

Released in 1981, “Stand And Deliver” became Adam & The Ants’ biggest hit and one of the defining singles of the early 1980s. Written by Adam Ant and Marco Pirroni, the song was the lead single from the album Prince Charming. Produced by Chris Hughes, it showcased the band’s unmistakable blend of new wave, glam rock and the tribal Burundi-influenced drumming that had become their signature sound. Its infectious chorus, dramatic arrangement and theatrical presentation helped cement Adam & The Ants as one of Britain’s most distinctive and successful pop acts.

Inspired by the image of an eighteenth-century highwayman, the song uses robbery as a playful metaphor while celebrating individuality, style and rebellion against convention. Adam Ant delivers the lyrics with swagger and charisma, supported by energetic chants and powerful harmonies that give the record an irresistible sense of fun. Marco Pirroni’s sharp guitar work, pounding dual-drum rhythms and colourful production combine to create a vibrant, instantly recognisable sound that perfectly captures the flamboyant spirit of the era. The unforgettable refrain of “Stand and deliver!” quickly became one of the decade’s most iconic pop hooks.

The song’s lavish music video, featuring Adam Ant dressed as a dashing highwayman, became an MTV favourite and won widespread acclaim for its creativity and humour. “Stand And Deliver” remains the band’s signature recording and a cornerstone of 1980s British pop, celebrated for its originality, theatrical flair and infectious energy. More than four decades later, it continues to be recognised as one of the era’s most enduring and distinctive hit singles.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK charts on 9th May 1981.

LYRICS

Stand and deliver!

I’m the dandy highwayman you’re too scared to mention
I spend my cash on looking flash and grabbing your attention
The devil take your stereo and your record collection
The way you look, you’ll qualify for next year’s old-age pension

Stand and deliver
Your money or your life
Try to use a mirror
Not a bullet or a knife

I’m the dandy highwayman, so sick of easy fashion
The clumsy boots, peek-a-boo roots that people think so dashing
So what’s the point of robbery when nothing is worth taking?
It’s kind of tough to tell a scruff the big mistake he’s making

Stand and deliver
Your money or your life
Try to use a mirror
Not a bullet or a knife

Even though you fool your soul
Your conscience will be mine
All mine

We’re the dandy highwaymen, so tired of excuses
Of deep meaning philosophies where only showbiz loses
We’re the dandy highwaymen and here’s our invitation
Throw your safety overboard and join our insect nation!

Stand and deliver
Your money or your life
Try to use a mirror
Not a bullet or a knife

Even though you fool your soul
Your conscience will be mine
All mine
