Story Behind The Song
Released in 1982, “Maid Of Orleans (The Waltz Of Joan Of Arc)” was one of Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark’s most ambitious and successful recordings. Written by Andy McCluskey, the song appeared on the album Architecture & Morality and was produced by Richard Manwaring in collaboration with the band. Unlike conventional pop singles of the time, it was written as a graceful waltz in 3/4 time, demonstrating OMD’s willingness to experiment while maintaining their gift for memorable melodies.
Inspired by the story of Joan Of Arc, the song pays tribute to the fifteenth-century French heroine with a sense of reverence rather than historical detail. Andy McCluskey’s understated vocal performance allows the music to convey much of the emotion, while Paul Humphreys’ lush synthesisers, orchestral textures and electronic rhythms create a rich, cinematic atmosphere. The elegant arrangement builds gradually, blending traditional melodic influences with pioneering electronic production to produce one of the most distinctive recordings of the early 1980s. Its haunting melody and refined simplicity give the song a timeless quality that continues to resonate.
“Maid Of Orleans (The Waltz Of Joan Of Arc)” reinforced OMD’s reputation as one of Britain’s most innovative electronic bands, proving that synth-pop could be both adventurous and emotionally powerful. The song remains one of the group’s defining achievements and a highlight of Architecture & Morality, an album widely regarded as a landmark of the genre. Today, it is celebrated for its beauty, originality and enduring influence on electronic music.
The song peaked at No. 04 in the UK singles chart on the 20th February 1982.

LYRICS
If Joan of Arc had a heart
Would she give it as a gift?
To such as me who longs to see
How an angel ought to be?
Her dream is to give her heart away
Like an orphan on a wave
She cared so much, she offered up
Her body to the grave
