Story Behind The Song

Released in 1989, “Be With You” was the fourth and final single from The Bangles’ third studio album, Everything. Written by Billy Steinberg and Walter Ingleheart, and produced by Davitt Sigerson, the song highlighted the band’s gift for polished guitar-pop and rich vocal harmonies. Although released towards the end of the group’s original recording career before their split later that year, it demonstrated that The Bangles had lost none of the melodic charm and musicianship that had made them one of the defining pop bands of the decade.

The song is an upbeat declaration of love and commitment, expressing a simple but heartfelt desire to be close to someone special. Susanna Hoffs delivers the lead vocal with warmth and sincerity, supported by the band’s trademark harmonies from Vicki Peterson, Debbi Peterson and Michael Steele. Bright jangling guitars, driving drums and melodic bass lines combine with polished production to create an infectious pop-rock sound, while the memorable chorus gives the song an effortless radio-friendly appeal. The combination of energetic musicianship and emotional honesty perfectly captures the band’s accessible style.

Although overshadowed by classics such as “Manic Monday”, “Walk Like An Egyptian” and “Eternal Flame”, “Be With You” remains an underrated gem in The Bangles’ catalogue. Today, it is appreciated for its uplifting melody, strong vocal performances and timeless production, serving as a fitting closing chapter to the band’s hugely successful first era before they reunited in the years that followed.

The song peaked at No. 23 in the UK singles chart on the 1st July 1989.

LYRICS

Out my window
The rain starts to fall and the wind blows
Through an empty hall
In the mirror, ooh, reflections of you

In the distance I hear a sound
Is that you coming around?

(What you gonna do?)
Oh, what you gonna do?
(I think I should)
I think I should be with you
(A love that’s overdue)
A love that’s overdue
Oh, I think I should be with you

Thought I saw you in a stranger’s face
Should I call you? Or should I walk away?
Around the corner is around the world

Is that you looking at me?
Or am I living a dream? Woah

(What you gonna do?)
Oh, what you gonna do?
(I think I should)
I think I should be with you
(A love that’s overdue)
A love that’s overdue
Oh, I think I should be with you

And when I’m lost in a dream, you are all I can see
All alone in the night, I’m waiting for you
Every moment I’d die just to look in your eyes
The dream is alive, I’m waiting
Oh my (Oh my), how I try
To make you see that I should be with you (Ooh, ooh)

In the distance I hear a sound
Is that you coming around?

(What you gonna do?)
Oh, what you gonna do?
(I think I should)
I think I should be with you
(A love that’s overdue)
A love that’s overdue
Oh, I think I should be with you

(Oh, I-I-I-I-I)
I think I should be with you
(I-I-I-I-I)
Oh, I think I should be with you
(I-I-I-I-I)
Yeah, I think I should be with you
