Story Behind The Song

Released in 1986, “Love Comes Quickly” was one of the most elegant and emotionally revealing songs on the Pet Shop Boys’ debut album, Please. Written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, with producer Stephen Hague receiving a co-writing credit for the middle section, the song demonstrated that beneath the duo’s cool electronic exterior was a strong fascination with romance and emotional vulnerability.

The song explores the sudden, disruptive nature of falling in love. Its narrator may believe that loneliness, independence and a comfortable life can keep emotional complications at a distance, but love has a habit of arriving unexpectedly. The message is simple yet beautifully observed: no amount of planning or self-protection can necessarily prevent someone from falling for another person.

Musically, “Love Comes Quickly” has a warm and atmospheric quality. Stephen Hague’s production combines sequenced bass, synthesised textures, programmed percussion and layered electronic sounds, while handclaps and an emerging high-string texture add further character. A particularly memorable touch comes towards the end, when Andy Mackay of Roxy Music contributes saxophone, giving the otherwise electronic recording an organic flourish.

Neil Tennant’s understated vocal is perfectly suited to the song’s reflective mood, while Chris Lowe’s intricate programming provides the musical foundation. The result is sophisticated, romantic and slightly melancholic, capturing the Pet Shop Boys at their most vulnerable. “Love Comes Quickly” remains a beautifully crafted example of their ability to turn electronic pop into something deeply human.

The song peaked at No. 19 on the UK charts on 29th March 1986.

LYRICS

Sooner or later
This happens to everyone
To everyone

You can live your life lonely
Heavy as stone
Live your life learning
And working alone
Say this is all you want
But I don’t believe that it is true
‘Cause when you least expect it
Waiting ’round the corner for you

Love comes quickly
Whatever you do
You can’t stop falling
Ooh, ooh
Love comes quickly
Whatever you do
You can’t stop falling

You can live a life of luxury
If that’s what you want
Taste forbidden pleasures
Whatever you want
You can fly away to the end of the world
But where does it get you to?
‘Cause just when you least expect it
Just what you least expect

Love comes quickly
Whatever you do
You can’t stop falling
Ooh, ooh
Love comes quickly
Whatever you do
You can’t stop falling
Ooh, ooh, ooh

I know it sounds ridiculous
But speaking from experience
It may seem romantic and that’s no defense
Love will always get to you

Sooner or later, sooner or later
This happens to everyone
To everyone

You can fly away to the end of the world
But where does it get you?

Love comes quickly
Whatever you do
You can’t stop falling
Ooh, ooh
Love comes quickly
Whatever you do
You can’t stop falling
Ooh, ooh
Love comes quickly
Whatever you do
You can’t stop falling
Ooh, ooh, ooh

Love comes quickly
Whatever you do
You can’t stop falling
Ooh, ooh
Love comes quickly
Whatever you do
You can’t stop falling
Ooh, ooh
