Story Behind The Song

Madonna’s “Into The Groove” is one of the defining dance-pop recordings of the 1980s, capturing the excitement, freedom and sensuality of the dance floor in a deceptively simple, irresistibly catchy arrangement. Written and produced by Madonna and Stephen Bray, the song was originally developed as a potential recording for another artist before Madonna decided to use it herself.

The track found its perfect setting in the 1985 film Desperately Seeking Susan, starring Madonna alongside Rosanna Arquette. A dance sequence in the film provided the opportunity to showcase the song, and its association with the energetic New York club scene helped reinforce Madonna’s image as a performer who blurred the boundaries between pop, fashion and dance culture.

Musically, “Into The Groove” is driven by synthesizers, drum machines and a pulsating bass line, with Madonna’s double-tracked vocals adding extra impact to the chorus. The lyrics invite a partner onto the dance floor, although their suggestive undertones give the song a more intimate edge.

Although it was not included on the original Like A Virgin album, “Into The Groove” was added to its 1985 international reissue. It subsequently became one of Madonna’s most enduring dance classics, demonstrating how effectively she could turn the atmosphere of an underground club into irresistible mainstream pop.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on the 3rd August 1985.

LYRICS

And you can dance
For inspiration
Come on
I’m waiting

Get into the groove
Boy, you’ve got to prove your love to me, yeah
Get up on your feet, yeah, step to the beat
Boy, what will it be?

Music can be such a revelation
Dancin’ around, you feel the sweet sensation
We might be lovers if the rhythm’s right
I hope this feelin’ never ends tonight

Only when I’m dancin’ can I feel this free
At night, I lock the doors, where no one else can see
I’m tired of dancin’ here all by myself
Tonight, I wanna dance with someone else

Get into the groove
Boy, you’ve got to prove your love to me, yeah
Get up on your feet, yeah, step to the beat
Boy, what will it be?

Gonna get to know you in a special way
This doesn’t happen to me every day
Don’t try to hide it, love wears no disguise
I see the fire burnin’ in your eyes

Only when I’m dancin’ can I feel this free
At night, I lock the doors, where no one else can see
I’m tired of dancin’ here all by myself
Tonight, I wanna dance with someone else

Get into the groove
Boy, you’ve got to prove your love to me, yeah
Get up on your feet, yeah, step to the beat
Boy, what will it be? (Yeah)

Live out your fantasy here with me
Just let the music set you free
Touch my body, and move in time
Now I know you’re mine (You’ve got to)
