Story Behind The Song

John Lennon’s “Woman” is a heartfelt tribute to love, understanding and the profound influence women can have on our lives. Released in 1981, it was written and recorded during the final period of Lennon’s life and became one of the most enduring songs from his later solo career. Its gentle melody and sincere lyrics reveal a more reflective side of the former Beatle, whose songwriting had continually evolved since his early days with the group.

Lennon wrote “Woman” as an expression of gratitude to his wife, Yoko Ono, while also intending the song as an appreciation of women everywhere. He described it as a kind of apology and acknowledgement, recognising the emotional strength, patience and understanding that women bring to relationships. The lyrics are personal without being exclusive, giving the song a universal quality that has helped it resonate with listeners across generations.

Musically, the recording is understated and elegant. A delicate guitar introduction leads into a warm arrangement featuring piano, bass and restrained percussion, allowing Lennon’s distinctive voice to remain at the centre. His delivery is tender and unforced, conveying affection and vulnerability rather than dramatic intensity. The memorable chorus rises naturally from the verses, reinforcing the sincerity of the message.

“Woman” appeared on Double Fantasy, Lennon’s collaborative album with Ono, which reflected their renewed creative activity and family life. Its enduring appeal lies in its simplicity: a sincere declaration of love, respect and appreciation that remains as moving today as when it was recorded.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 7th November 1981.

SONG LYRICS

(For the other half of the sky)

Woman, I can hardly express
My mixed emotions at my thoughtlessness
After all, I’m forever in your debt
And woman, I will try to express
My inner feelings and thankfulness
For showing me the meaning of success

Ooh-ooh, well, well
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Ooh-ooh, well, well
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo

Woman, I know you understand
The little child inside the man
Please remember my life is in your hands
And woman, hold me close to your heart
However distant, don’t keep us apart
After all, it is written in the stars

Ooh-ooh, well, well
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Ooh-ooh, well, well
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, well

Woman, please let me explain
I never meant to cause you sorrow or pain
So let me tell you again and again and again

I love you, yeah, yeah
Now and forever
I love you, yeah, yeah
Now and forever
I love you, yeah, yeah
Now and forever
I love you, yeah, yeah
Now and forever
