Story Behind The Song
Kylie Minogue’s “Hand On Your Heart” captures the bright, polished sound of late-1980s pop, combining an infectious melody with the sophisticated production that helped establish her as an international star. Released in 1989, the song marked another successful collaboration with the British songwriting and production team Stock Aitken Waterman, whose distinctive sound dominated much of the decade’s mainstream pop music.
Written and produced by Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman, the recording is built around crisp synthesizers, a driving rhythm and a memorable chorus designed to make an immediate impression. Kylie’s youthful, clear vocal delivery gives the song an appealing lightness, while the layered backing vocals and tightly arranged instrumentation create the energetic atmosphere associated with the production team’s work.
Beneath its cheerful exterior, “Hand On Your Heart” explores the uncertainty of a relationship approaching a crossroads. The lyrics challenge a partner to be honest about their feelings, asking for a direct answer rather than accepting evasions or empty reassurances. This mixture of emotional vulnerability and assertiveness gives the song more substance than its glossy pop arrangement might initially suggest.
By this stage in her career, Kylie had developed considerably from her beginnings as an actress on Australian television, establishing a distinctive musical identity through a succession of carefully crafted pop recordings. “Hand On Your Heart” remains a fine example of that formula at its most effective, combining an irresistible hook with immaculate production. Its upbeat energy and timeless melody continue to capture the spirit of British pop at the close of the 1980s.
The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 13th May 1989.

SONG LYRICS
Put your hand on your heart and tell me
That we’re through, ooh, oh
Ooh, whoa
Put your hand on your heart
Hand on your heart
Well, it’s one thing to fall in love
But another to make it last
I thought that we were just beginning
And now you say we’re in the past
Oh, look me in the eye
And tell me we are really through
You know it’s one thing to say you love me
But another to mean it from the heart
And if you don’t intend to see it through
Why did we ever start?
Oh, I wanna hear you tell me
You don’t want my love
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me it’s all over
I won’t believe it ’til you
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me that we’re through, ooh, oh
Put your hand on your heart
Hand on your heart
They like to talk about forever
But most people never get the chance
Do you wanna lose our love together
To find a new romance?
Oh, I wanna hear you tell me
You don’t want my love
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me it’s all over
I won’t believe it ’til you
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me that we’re through, ooh, oh
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me it’s all over
I won’t believe it ’til you
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me that we’re through, ooh, oh
Put your hand on your heart
Hand on your heart
Hand on your heart, hand on your heart
Hand on your heart, hand on your heart
Oh, look me in the eye
And tell me we are really through
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me it’s all over
I won’t believe it ’til you
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me that we’re through, ooh, oh
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me it’s all over
I won’t believe it ’til you
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me that we’re through, ooh, oh
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me it’s all over
I won’t believe it ’til you
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me that we’re through, ooh, oh
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me it’s all over
I won’t believe it ’til you
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me that we’re through, ooh, oh
