Story Behind The Song
Doctor & The Medics brought a flamboyant, psychedelic energy to “Spirit In The Sky”, transforming Norman Greenbaum’s much-loved recording into a colourful slice of mid-1980s pop-rock. Released in 1986, their version combined the original’s distinctive guitar riff and gospel-inspired backing vocals with the theatrical image and eccentric personality that had become central to the London band’s identity.
Originally written and recorded by American musician Norman Greenbaum in 1969, the song blends rock, gospel and religious imagery, with lyrics expressing the hope of reaching heaven after death. Its instantly recognisable fuzz guitar sound, stomping rhythm and repeated vocal refrain give it an infectious quality that has made it one of the most distinctive recordings of its era.
Doctor & The Medics, fronted by the flamboyantly dressed Doctor, gave the composition a more colourful and theatrical treatment. Their version retains the essential structure of Greenbaum’s original while adding a heavier production, energetic vocals and an unmistakable psychedelic atmosphere. The backing vocals provide a powerful gospel influence, reinforcing the song’s spiritual theme and giving the chorus an uplifting sense of celebration.
The accompanying video reflected the group’s extravagant visual style, featuring striking costumes, dramatic make-up and surreal imagery that perfectly suited the recording.
Although the song was already a familiar classic, Doctor & The Medics succeeded in giving it a fresh identity for a new generation. Their interpretation remains a memorable example of 1980s pop’s enthusiasm for reinvention, combining nostalgia, theatricality and an irresistible musical hook.
The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 7th June 1986.

SONG LYRICS
When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that’s best
When they lay me down to die
Goin’ on up to the Spirit in the sky
Goin’ on up to the Spirit in the sky
That’s where I’m gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
I’m gonna go to the place that’s the best
Prepare yourself, you know it a must
Gotta have a friend named Jesus
So you know that when you die
It’s gonna recommend you to the Spirit in the sky
Goin’ on up to the Spirit in the sky
That’s where you’re gonna go when you die
When I die and they lay me to rest
I’m gonna go to the place that’s the best
Never been a sinner, I’ve never sinned
I’ve got a friend named Jesus
So you know that when I die
It’s gonna set me up with the Spirit in the sky
Goin’ on up to the Spirit in the sky
That’s where you’re gonna go when you die
When I die and they lay me to rest
I’m gonna go to the place that’s the best
That’s where you’re gonna go when you die
When I die and they lay me to rest
I’m gonna go to the place that’s the best
Gonna go to the place that’s the best
Gonna go to the place that’s the best
Gonna go to the place that’s the best
Gonna go to the place that’s the best
