Story Behind The Song

Released in 1984, “Pride (In The Name Of Love)” became one of U2’s defining songs and marked a major turning point in the band’s career. It was the lead single from the album The Unforgettable Fire, their first collaboration with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. The partnership introduced a richer, more atmospheric sound while retaining the driving energy that had already made the Irish quartet one of the most exciting rock bands of the decade.

Written by Bono, the song pays tribute to the American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., celebrating his courage, ideals and commitment to non-violent change. Although some historical details in the lyrics were later acknowledged by Bono as inaccurate, the song’s emotional power and universal message of hope, equality and sacrifice have ensured its lasting impact. The Edge’s chiming guitar riff, Adam Clayton’s solid bass line and Larry Mullen Jr.’s powerful drumming provide the perfect backdrop for Bono’s passionate vocal performance.

“Pride (In The Name Of Love)” helped establish U2 as a major international force and became a permanent fixture of the band’s live performances. Its soaring chorus and inspirational message continue to resonate with audiences decades after its release. Today, it is regarded as one of the greatest anthems of the 1980s, celebrated for its powerful songwriting, memorable guitar work and enduring tribute to the ideals of justice, freedom and human dignity.

The song peaked at No. 03 on the UK charts on 29th September 1984.

LYRICS

One man come in the name of love
One man come and go
One man come, he to justify
One man to overthrow

In the name of love
What more in the name of love?
In the name of love
What more in the name of love?

One man caught on a barbed wire fence
One man, he resist
One man washed on an empty beach
One man betrayed with a kiss

In the name of love
What more in the name of love?
In the name of love
What more in the name of love?

Nobody but you
Somebody lied to you (It’s all right)
Somebody to you
(The bright line)
(It’s all ready, mate)
(It’s the right time)

Mm-mm-mm, mm-mm-mm
Mm-mm-mm-mmm

Early morning, April four
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride

In the name of love
What more in the name of love?
In the name of love
What more in the name of love?
In the name of love (Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh-oh-oh)
What more in the name of love? (Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh-oh-oh)
In the name of love (Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh-oh-oh)
What more in the name of love? (Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh-oh-oh)

(Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh-oh-oh)
Mm-mm-mm, mm-mm-mm-mmm (Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh-oh-oh)
(Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh-oh-oh)
Mm-mm-mm, mm-mm-mm-mmm (Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh-oh-oh)
