Phyllis NelsonPhyllis Nelson (1950–1998) was an American singer-songwriter who made music history in the mid-1980s. After starting her career in family groups and singing backup, she initially focused on dance and disco records.

Nelson achieved monumental international stardom when she wrote and recorded the seductive, slow-dance ballad “Move Closer”. The track skyrocketed to number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1985, making her the first Black woman to top the British charts with a self-composed song. She also topped the US dance charts with “I Like You”.
