Story Behind The Song
Released in 1980, “No-One Driving” was the third single from John Foxx’s landmark solo album, Metamatic. Written by Foxx and produced by him in collaboration with Steve Lillywhite, the song further explored the minimalist electronic sound that had established him as one of the pioneers of synth-pop following his departure from Ultravox. Built around icy synthesisers, mechanical rhythms and sparse arrangements, the recording perfectly captured the futuristic aesthetic that defined both the album and the emerging electronic music scene.
The song presents a vision of a world dominated by technology, where automation and detachment have replaced human emotion and control. Its title serves as a metaphor for a society moving forward without clear direction, reflecting themes of isolation, modernity and the uneasy relationship between people and machines. John Foxx delivers the lyrics in a calm, understated style that enhances the song’s detached atmosphere, while pulsing sequencers, crisp drum machine patterns and layered synthesisers create an hypnotic, almost cinematic soundscape. The restrained production allows the song’s unsettling mood to develop gradually, drawing listeners into its futuristic world.
Although “No-One Driving” was never one of John Foxx’s biggest commercial successes, it has become an important recording in the history of electronic music. Its innovative production and forward-thinking approach influenced countless synth-pop and electronic artists throughout the 1980s and beyond. Today, it is regarded as one of the standout tracks from Metamatic and a defining example of John Foxx’s visionary musical style.
The song peaked at No. 32 in the UK charts on 29th March 1980.

LYRICS
Seems like you were lit inside
I feel like fog beside the shine
Figure fades away, someone takes my place
Meshing with the pictures on the pages
There’s no-one driving
There’s no-one driving
There’s no-one driving
There’s no-one
There’s no-one driving
There’s no-one driving
There’s no-one driving
There’s no-one
Someone’s gone liquid in the sheets
A sudden smell of burning leaves
The old streets overgrown, there’s somewhere else to go
It’s just another switchback, can’t we fade?
There’s no-one driving
There’s no-one driving
There’s no-one driving
There’s no-one
