Story Behind The Song

Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” is one of the most distinctive recordings of the 1980s, combining an insistent electronic rhythm with atmospheric synthesizers and one of Bush’s most emotionally charged vocal performances. Released in 1985 as the first single from Hounds Of Love, it was written and produced by Bush.

The song explores the difficulties of understanding another person within a relationship. Bush imagined a man and woman being able to exchange places, allowing each to experience the other’s emotions and perhaps overcome the misunderstandings created by their differences. The original title, “A Deal With God”, expressed this idea directly, although it was changed because of concerns that the religious reference might affect the song’s reception.

Musically, the recording was built around a Fairlight CMI synthesizer riff and a programmed LinnDrum rhythm. Bush created the central rhythmic pattern by singing it to Del Palmer, who programmed it into the drum machine. Stuart Elliott later added live percussion, while bass, guitar and balalaika helped give the electronic foundation a richer, more organic character.

Bush’s passionate vocal gives the song its sense of urgency, while the relentless rhythm creates the impression of constant movement. The result is both intimate and epic, turning a deeply personal idea about empathy and relationships into an unforgettable piece of electronic pop.

The song peaked at No. 03 in the UK charts on 31st August 1985.

LYRICS

It doesn’t hurt me (Yeah, yeah, yo)
Do you wanna feel how it feels? (Yeah, yeah, yo)
Do you wanna know, know that it doesn’t hurt me? (Yeah, yeah, yo)
Do you wanna hear about the deal that I’m makin’? (Yeah, yeah, yo)

You
It’s you and me

And if I only could
I’d make a deal with God
And I’d get him to swap our places
Be runnin’ up that road
Be runnin’ up that hill
Be runnin’ up that buildin’
Say, if I only could, ooh-ooh

You don’t wanna hurt me (Yeah, yeah, yo)
But see how deep the bullet lies (Yeah, yeah, yo)
Unaware, I’m tearin’ you asunder (Yeah, yeah, yo)
Oh, there is thunder in our hearts (Yeah, yeah, yo)
Is there so much hate for the ones we love? (Yeah, yeah, yo)
Oh, tell me, we both matter, don’t we? (Yeah, yeah, yo)

You
It’s you and me
It’s you and me, you won’t be unhappy

And if I only could
I’d make a deal with God
And I’d get him to swap our places
Be runnin’ up that road
Be runnin’ up that hill
Be runnin’ up that buildin’ (Yo)
Say, if I only could, ooh-ooh

You (Yeah, yeah, yo)
It’s you and me
It’s you and me, you won’t be unhappy (Yeah, yeah, yo)

Oh, come on, baby (Yeah)
Oh, come on, darlin’ (Yo)
Let me steal this moment from you now
Oh, come on, angel
Come on, come on, darlin’
Let’s exchange the experience (Yo, ooh, ooh)

If I only could
I’d make a deal with God
And I’d get him to swap our places
I’d be runnin’ up that road
Be runnin’ up that hill
With no problems
Say, if I only could
I’d make a deal with God
And I’d get him to swap our places
I’d be runnin’ up that road
Be runnin’ up that hill
With no problems
Say, if I only could
I’d make a deal with God
And I’d get him to swap our places
I’d be runnin’ up that road
Be runnin’ up that hill
With no problems

Say, if I only could
Be runnin’ up that hill
With no problems
(If I only could, be runnin’ up that hill)
(If I only could, be runnin’ up that hill)
