Story Behind The Song

Released in 1983, “Candy Girl” was the breakthrough single for New Edition and introduced the Boston-based group as one of the most exciting young vocal acts of the decade. Written and produced by Maurice Starr and Michael Jonzun, the song drew inspiration from the sound of The Jackson 5, combining youthful energy with infectious pop and R&B melodies. It also served as the title track of the group’s debut album, launching the careers of Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe.

The song is a sweet declaration of young love, with the lyrics comparing the object of the singer’s affection to candy because of the happiness and excitement she brings. Bright harmonies, catchy hooks and an upbeat rhythm give the track its irresistible charm, while Ralph Tresvant’s confident lead vocal is complemented by the group’s polished backing harmonies. Its feel-good production perfectly captured the innocence and optimism of teenage romance.

“Candy Girl” established New Edition as rising stars and laid the foundations for one of the most influential careers in contemporary R&B. The group’s success would inspire a new generation of boy bands and help shape the sound of popular music throughout the 1980s and beyond. Today, the song remains a nostalgic favourite, celebrated for its timeless melody, youthful exuberance and the glimpse it offered of the remarkable talent that would propel New Edition to lasting success.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK charts on 28th May 1983.

LYRICS

My girl’s like candy, a candy treat
She knocks me high up off my feet
She’s so fine, as can be
I know this girl is meant for me
Candy girl
You are my world
You look so sweet
You’re a special treat
Candy girl
All I want to say
When you’re with me
You brighten up my day

All I know when I’m with you
You make me feel so good, through and through
The way you walk, and the way you talk
You always look so good, you make forget my thoughts

(Do you really love me?) Do you really love me?
(Don’t you really care?) Don’t you really care?
(Do you really need me?) Do you really need me
And will you always be there?

Every night and every day
I’m always thinkin’ of you in every way
All I know when I’m with you
You make me feel so good, through and through
Candy girl, you are my world
You’re everything, everything, everything to me
Candy girl, all I want to say
I need your love, each and every day!

Hey fellas! (What?)
Check out Mike and Bobby’s little lady!
(Ooooh-weeeee!)
Well, check out Ricky and Ralph’s!
(Oooooh-weeee!)
What about Ronnie’s!
She’s bad, she’s bad, I know she’s bad!

She walks so fast, she looks so sweet
She makes my heart just skip a beat
My girl’s the best and that’s no lie
She tells me that I’m her only guy!
That might be true, but my girl’s a joy
She don’t play around, she’s right to the point!
My girl’s like candy, a candy treat
She knocks me high up off my feet

Oh, candy
You look so sweet
Oh, candy!
You’re a special treat
Candy (You’re my candy), candy girl (Candy)
Candy (Girl, you’re my candy), candy girl (Candy)
Candy girl, you are my world
I need your love, each and every day
Candy girl, all I want to say
You’re everything, everything, everything to me
Candy girl, you are my world
I need your love, each and every day
Candy girl
I need it, need it, need it, need it, need it every day
Candy girl…
