Story Behind The Song

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark’s “Souvenir” is one of the most elegant and atmospheric recordings of the early synth-pop era. Released in 1981 on the album Architecture & Morality, it was written by Paul Humphreys and Martin Cooper, with Humphreys also taking the lead vocal. Produced by Mike Howlett, the song represented a softer and more romantic side of OMD’s sound.

The track originated from experimental recordings of an eight-piece choir warming up, which had been made by former OMD member Dave Hughes. Humphreys and Cooper transformed the vocal loops into haunting electronic chords, initially creating a much slower and more abstract composition known as “Choir Song”. The choral textures became one of the recording’s defining features, shimmering behind Humphreys’s delicate vocal.

“Souvenir” was notable within OMD’s catalogue because it was the first single to feature Humphreys on lead vocals. His gentle, almost fragile delivery gives the song an intimacy that contrasts beautifully with the layered electronics and synthesizer melody. The lyrics express uncertainty, obsession and lingering emotions, creating a sense of wistful introspection.

The accompanying promotional film, directed by Peter Saville, added to the song’s dreamlike quality, placing Humphreys among the classical surroundings of Blenheim Palace while Andy McCluskey appears driving through the countryside.

With its combination of electronic innovation, choral textures and understated emotion, “Souvenir” remains one of OMD’s most beautiful and distinctive recordings.

The song peaked at No. 03 in the UK singles chart on the 19th September 1981.

LYRICS

It’s my direction, it’s my proposal
It’s so hard, it’s leading me astray
My obsession, it’s my creation
You’ll understand it’s not important now

All I need is coordination
I can’t imagine my destination
My intention, ask my opinion
But no excuse, my feelings still remain

My feelings still remain
