Siouxsie & The Banshees – Dear Prudence

Released in 1983, “Dear Prudence” became one of Siouxsie & The Banshees’ most successful and accessible singles. Originally written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney for The Beatles’ 1968 White Album, the song was transformed by the band into a shimmering, atmospheric recording that reflected their distinctive post-punk style. Produced by Mike Hedges, it appeared as a standalone single before later being included on some editions of the compilation album Once Upon A Time: The Singles.

Rather than simply recreating the original, Siouxsie & The Banshees reimagined “Dear Prudence” with bright, chiming guitars, layered synthesisers and a driving rhythm section. Siouxsie Sioux’s expressive vocal performance gives the song a cool elegance, while guitarist John McGeoch’s intricate playing adds a sparkling, melodic quality that became one of the defining features of the recording. The band’s arrangement balances the optimism of the original composition with the darker, more atmospheric sound for which they had become renowned.
