Story Behind The Song
Released in 1980, “Private Life” was one of the standout singles from Grace Jones’ acclaimed album Warm Leatherette. Written by Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, the song was transformed by Jones into a striking fusion of reggae, new wave and art pop. Produced by Chris Blackwell and Alex Sadkin at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas, the recording marked a bold new direction in Jones’ career and became one of her signature performances.
The lyrics address emotional distance and the damage caused by secrecy and self-centred behaviour within a relationship. Grace Jones delivers the song with cool authority, her distinctive vocal style bringing a sense of confidence and detachment that contrasts beautifully with the vulnerability beneath the words. Sly and Robbie’s spacious reggae groove, combined with atmospheric guitars, understated keyboards and crisp percussion, creates a hypnotic backdrop that perfectly complements Jones’ commanding presence. Rather than imitating the original version, she completely reinvented the song, giving it a darker, more sophisticated character.
“Private Life” became one of the defining recordings of Grace Jones’ career and demonstrated her remarkable ability to reinterpret material in her own unmistakable style. Its innovative blend of reggae, rock and avant-garde pop influenced countless artists during the following decades. Today, the song remains a classic of the early 1980s, celebrated for its fearless originality, elegant production and Grace Jones’ unforgettable performance.
It peaked at No. 17 in the UK Singles Chart on 23rd August 1980.

LYRICS
J’en ai marre with your theatrics, your acting’s a drag
It’s ok on TV, but you can turn it off
Your marriage is a tragedy, but it’s not my concern
I’m very superficial, I hate everything official
Your private life drama, baby, leave me out
Your private life drama, baby, leave me out
Sentimental gestures only bore me to death
You’ve made a desperate appeal, now save your breath
Attachment to obligation, regret shit that’s so wet
And your sex life complications are not my fascinations
Your private life drama, baby, leave me out
Your private life drama, baby, leave me out
Oh, oh-oh
You asked my advice, I say use the door
But you’re still clinging to somebody you deplore
And now you want to use me for emotional blackmail?
I just feel pity when you lie, contempt when you cry
Your private life drama, baby, leave me out
Your private life drama, baby, leave me out
Oh, oh-oh
Your private life drama, baby, leave me out
Your private life drama, baby, leave me out
Your private life drama, baby, leave me out
Your private life drama, baby, leave me out
