Story Behind The Song
Released in 1982, “Deutscher Girls” was a single by Adam & The Ants, although the recording itself dated back to 1977 when Adam Ant was fronting the original, punk-inspired line-up of The Ants. The song was originally recorded for Derek Jarman’s film Jubilee and was later reissued following the band’s enormous commercial success, giving audiences a chance to hear one of Adam Ant’s earliest recordings. Produced by Guy Ford for the Jubilee soundtrack sessions, the track offers a fascinating glimpse into the raw beginnings of an artist who would soon become one of Britain’s biggest pop stars.
The song reflects the rebellious spirit of the late-1970s punk movement, combining provocative lyrics with a stripped-back, energetic sound. Adam Ant’s youthful vocal performance is filled with attitude and urgency, while jagged guitars, driving bass lines and uncomplicated rhythms capture the uncompromising style of the era. Unlike the polished, Burundi-inspired sound that later defined Adam & The Ants, “Deutscher Girls” has a rougher edge that highlights the band’s punk roots and their willingness to challenge convention.
Although overshadowed by major hits such as “Stand And Deliver” and “Prince Charming”, “Deutscher Girls” remains an important part of Adam Ant’s musical story. It documents the transition from London’s punk underground to mainstream success and continues to be appreciated by fans as an intriguing snapshot of the band’s formative years and Adam Ant’s early creative vision.
It peaked at No. 13 in the UK Singles Chart on 6th March 1982.

LYRICS
We’ll do the tango
We’ll try the foxtrot
I’ll eat a mango
You’ll drink a straight scotch
You know I told you
You could be classy
So why did you have
To be so nasty?
Remember the curls
Of the Deutscher girls
Lover of mine
From down on the Rhine
I’ll fill your bath with
The finest champagne
I’ll lick your skin dry
I cherish your name
The stakes get higher
As you dress sparsely
So why did you have
To be so nasty?
Remember the curls
Of the Deutscher girls
Well, lover of mine
From down on the Rhine
I love your blonde hair
I kiss your pigtails
And I could not share
The scratch of your nails
And though you mock me
Your eyes so glassy
Oh, why did you have
To be so nasty?
Remember the curls
Of the Deutscher girls
Lover of mine
From down on the Rhine
I said, remember the curls
Of the Deutscher girls
Lover of mine
From down on the Rhine
I said, remember the curls
Of the Deutscher girls
Lover of mine
From down on the Rhine
