Story Behind The Song
Released in 1983, “When We Were Young” was one of the standout singles from Bucks Fizz’s third studio album, Hand Cut. Written by Warren Bacall, and produced by Andy Hill and Brian Tench, the song marked a more mature direction for the group, moving beyond the upbeat pop that had first brought them international success. With its polished production, soaring melody and emotional lyrics, it demonstrated the vocal strengths of Bobby G, Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan and Jay Aston.
The song reflects on the passing of time and the longing to recapture the optimism and innocence of youth. Rather than dwelling on regret, the lyrics celebrate treasured memories while recognising that life’s experiences shape who we become. The heartfelt lead vocals, supported by the group’s rich harmonies, give the song warmth and sincerity, while sweeping keyboards, subtle orchestration, melodic guitars and a powerful rhythm section create a polished, uplifting arrangement. The memorable chorus and dramatic production helped establish the track as one of Bucks Fizz’s finest recordings.
“When We Were Young” reinforced the group’s reputation for delivering sophisticated pop songs with strong melodies and thoughtful lyrics. Although often overshadowed by earlier hits such as “Making Your Mind Up” and “The Land Of Make Believe”, it remains a favourite among fans and is widely regarded as one of the highlights of their catalogue. Today, the song is admired for its emotional depth, polished musicianship and timeless appeal, standing as a fine example of British pop craftsmanship during the early 1980s.
It peaked at No. 10 in the UK Singles Chart on 25th June 1983.

LYRICS
Crying softly on to clean white pillow
Watch the clock as it slowly crawls around
Rolls around
Is she sleeping, no, is she dreaming?
Time it passes without that familiar touch
Familiar touch
Love has gone, tears are here, nothing left
Life has changed, remember when we were young
Were young
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young
She pours a coffee and looks in the mirror
Suddenly she’s glad he can’t see her face
Can’t see her face
Youth, it passes while age is collected
Disapears from behind the wires without trace
Without trace
Love has gone, tears are here, nothing left
Life has changed, remember when we were young
Were young
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young
Da-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la
Da-la-la, la-la-la la-la-la-la
Da-la-la-la
Da-la-ah-ah
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young
Love has gone, tears are here, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing
Life has changed, remember when we were young
Were young
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young
