Story Behind The Song
Released in 1980, “Running Free” was the debut single by Iron Maiden and one of the standout tracks from their self-titled debut album. Written by bassist Steve Harris and vocalist Paul Di’Anno, the song introduced audiences to the raw energy and attitude that would become hallmarks of the band. Produced by Wil Malone, it combined the aggression of punk with the precision of heavy metal, helping to establish Iron Maiden as one of the leading forces of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.
The song tells the story of a rebellious young man determined to live life on his own terms, refusing to be tied down by authority or convention. Paul Di’Anno’s gritty, streetwise vocal perfectly captures the spirit of youthful defiance, while Steve Harris’ trademark galloping bass lines drive the song forward with relentless energy. Dave Murray’s melodic guitar work, supported by Dennis Stratton’s rhythm guitar and Clive Burr’s powerful drumming, creates a punchy, memorable arrangement that remains one of the band’s most recognisable early recordings. Its singalong chorus and straightforward structure made it an immediate live favourite.
“Running Free” marked the beginning of Iron Maiden’s remarkable journey from East London clubs to worldwide success. It quickly became a staple of the band’s concerts, often extended with audience participation that showcased their close connection with fans. Today, the song is regarded as one of the defining tracks of Iron Maiden’s early years, celebrated for its infectious energy, memorable riffs and enduring influence on heavy metal music.
It peaked at No. 34 in the UK Singles Chart on 8th March 1980.

LYRICS
Okay
Just sixteen, a pickup truck
Out of money, out of luck
I’ve got nowhere to call my own
Hit the gas, and here I go
I’m running free, yeah
I’m running free
I’m running free, yeah
Oh, I’m running free
I spent the night in an L.A. jail
And listened to the sirens wail
But they ain’t got a thing on me
I’m running wild, I’m running free, yeah
I’m running free, yeah
I’m running free
I’m running free, yeah
Oh, I’m running free
Get out of my way, hey
I’m running free, yeah
I’m running free
I’m running free, yeah
Oh, I’m running free, free
Ow
Pulled her at the Bottle Top
Whiskey, dancing, disco hop
Now all the boys are after me
And that’s the way it’s gonna be, yeah
I’m running free, yeah
I’m running free
I’m running free, yeah
Oh, I’m running free, oh
I’m running free, yeah
I’m running free
I’m running, I’m running (I’m running free, yeah)
I’m running (I’m running free), ooh, yeah, yeah
I’m running, I’m running (I’m running free, yeah)
I’m running (I’m running free)
Ooh, yeah, running, I’m running (I’m running free, yeah)
I’m running (I’m running free)
Yeah
Ow, ow
Ow, ow
