Story Behind The Song
Released in 1981, “Twilight Zone” was a standalone single by Iron Maiden in the UK and appeared on the American edition of the band’s second album, Killers. Written by Steve Harris and Dave Murray, the song was produced by Iron Maiden. Shorter and more melodic than many of the band’s recordings, it demonstrated Iron Maiden’s ability to combine memorable hooks with their trademark power and precision.
Inspired by supernatural themes, the lyrics tell the story of a man haunted by the ghost of a lost love, blurring the line between reality and the spirit world. Paul Di’Anno delivers a dramatic vocal performance that perfectly complements the song’s eerie atmosphere, while the twin-guitar partnership of Dave Murray and Adrian Smith provides soaring harmonies, melodic riffs and expressive solos. Steve Harris’ unmistakable galloping bass lines and Clive Burr’s energetic drumming drive the song forward, creating a tight, dynamic arrangement that balances melody with the band’s characteristic intensity.
Although “Twilight Zone” is sometimes overlooked alongside Iron Maiden’s bigger hits, it remains a favourite among long-time fans and highlights the creativity of the band’s early years. Its memorable chorus, atmospheric storytelling and polished musicianship have ensured its lasting appeal, and today it is regarded as one of the strongest recordings from the Paul Di’Anno era, capturing Iron Maiden’s emergence as one of the defining bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. The song was released as a AA single with “Wrathchild”.
The song peaked at No. 31 in the UK charts on 21st March 1981.

LYRICS
She lays in bed at night and that is when I make my call
But when she stares at me, she can’t see nothing at all
Because, you see, I can’t take no shape or form
Been three long years since I’ve been gone
I can’t get used to purgatory, you know it really makes me cry
I’ll never know the reason why I had to go
Oh, oh, I’m crying
Oh, oh, oh, deep inside me
Oh, oh, oh, can’t you see me?
Ah, ah, ah, can’t you see me?
I’m looking forward to her spirit coming over to me
I feel so tempted to bring her on over to see
Just what it’s like to be hanging on the other side
Feel so lonely, it’s a long time since I died
I try to show her that she never gonna be alone
Because her spirit is imprisoned in the twilight zone
Oh, oh, I’m crying
Oh, oh, oh, deep inside me
Oh, oh, oh, can’t you hear me?
Ah, ah, ah, can’t you see me?
