Story Behind The Song

Released in 1981, “Sgt. Rock (Is Going To Help Me)” was one of the more playful and unconventional songs on XTC’s acclaimed album Black Sea. Written by Andy Partridge and produced by Steve Lillywhite, the track drew inspiration from the comic-book character Sgt. Rock, using the larger-than-life military hero as the imaginary solution to the singer’s romantic frustrations.

The song is deliberately humorous, with Partridge portraying a rather awkward narrator who believes that a fictional action hero might somehow help him overcome his difficulties with women. Beneath the comic-book imagery is a knowingly nerdy and self-deprecating character study, giving the song a very different tone from some of the more serious material on Black Sea.

Musically, XTC create a lively combination of new wave, pop and post-punk influences. Terry Chambers’ drumming provides an almost military-style opening before the song settles into its infectious, bouncing rhythm. Partridge’s guitar and vocals are joined by Dave Gregory’s guitar work and Colin Moulding’s bass, creating the tight, energetic sound that characterised the band during this period.

The recording also reflects XTC’s ability to turn unusual ideas into catchy, memorable pop songs. Although Partridge later expressed embarrassment about the lyrics and felt the joke had not worked as intended, the song remains an entertaining example of the band’s quirky sense of humour and inventive songwriting.

“Sgt. Rock (Is Going To Help Me)” is a charmingly eccentric slice of early-1980s XTC, full of energy, wit and comic-book imagination.

The song peaked at No. 16 in the UK charts on 21st February 1981.

LYRICS

Hey, rock, rock!
Hey, rock, rock!
Hey, rock, rock!
Hey, rock, rock!

I’m enlisting, overseas aid
Need assisting, help with a maid
Get the expert on mademoiselles
He could defuse any bombshell

If I could only be tough like him
Then I could win my own small battle of the sexes

And Sgt. Rock is going to help me
Make the girl mine, keep her stood in line
And Sgt. Rock is going to help me
Make the girl mine, keep her stood in line
And make the girl mine, wave the victory sign

Hey, rock, rock!
Hey, rock, rock!
Hey, rock, rock!
Hey, rock, rock!

I’m invading territories
Girls are foreign and strange to me
Get the expert at kissing and stuff
Well, he stays easy when things get rough

If I could only be tough like him
Then I could win my own small battle of the sexes

And Sgt. Rock is going to help me
Make the girl mine, keep her stood in line
And Sgt. Rock is going to help me
Make the girl mine, keep her stood in line
And make the girl mine, wave the victory sign

Sometimes relationships don’t go as planned
Some girls can make themselves so cold
A no man’s land

If I could only be tough like him
Then I could win my own small battle of the sexes

And Sgt. Rock is going to help me
Make the girl mine, keep her stood in line
And Sgt. Rock is going to help me
Make the girl mine, keep her stood in line
And Sgt. Rock is going to help me
Make the girl mine, keep her stood in line
And Sgt. Rock is going to help me
Make the girl mine, keep her stood in line
Make the girl mine, wave the victory sign

Hey, rock, rock!
Hey, rock, rock!
Hey, rock, rock!
Hey!
