Story Behind The Song

Yazoo’s “Only You” is one of the most beautiful and enduring synth-pop ballads of the early 1980s. Released in 1982 as the duo’s debut single, it brought together the minimalist electronic approach of Vince Clarke with the remarkably soulful voice of Alison Moyet, creating a sound that was both intimate and strikingly original.

Clarke wrote “Only You” shortly after leaving Depeche Mode, initially intending it as a song to demonstrate his songwriting to Mute Records. He had already recorded a simple electronic backing when he approached Moyet, whom he had known casually since their schooldays in Basildon. Moyet’s powerful, expressive vocal transformed the understated composition, giving the song an emotional depth that the sparse arrangement leaves completely exposed.

Recorded at Blackwing Studios, the track was produced by Eric Radcliffe, Clarke and Mute founder Daniel Miller. Its restrained combination of synthesizer, electronic textures and Moyet’s voice creates an atmosphere of loneliness and vulnerability, perfectly matching lyrics about separation, uncertainty and the desire to remain close to someone.

“Only You” also established the distinctive chemistry between Clarke and Moyet. Neither overwhelms the other: his cool, precise electronics provide the framework, while her voice supplies the warmth and human emotion. The result is a timeless recording whose simplicity remains one of its greatest strengths.

The song peaked at No. 02 in the UK singles chart on the 22nd May 1982.

LYRICS

Looking from a window above
It’s like a story of love
Can you hear me?
Came back only yesterday
I’m moving farther away
Want you near me

All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew
Only you

Sometimes when I think of her name
When it’s only a game
And I need you
Listen to the words that you say
It’s getting harder to stay
When I see you

All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew
Only you

All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew
Only you

This is going to take a long time
And I wonder what’s mine
Can’t take no more (Can’t take no more)
Wonder if you’ll understand
It’s just the touch of your hand
Behind a closed door

All I needed was the love you gave
All I needed for another day
And all I ever knew (All I ever knew)
Only you
