Story Behind The Song
Propaganda’s “Duel” is a superb example of the sophisticated, atmospheric synth-pop emerging from Germany in the mid-1980s. Released in 1985 and featured on the band’s debut album A Secret Wish, the song was written by Claudia Brücken, Susanne Freytag, Ralf Dörper and Michael Mertens, with production handled by Stephen Lipson.
The song takes the idea of a romantic relationship as a battle, portraying two lovers locked in an increasingly destructive confrontation. Images of winners and losers, jealousy, emotional wounds and the gradual collapse of passion give the lyrics a darker edge than its bright, deceptively cheerful melody might initially suggest.
Musically, “Duel” was deliberately constructed around a clash between opposing elements. Dörper described the intention as having the melodic sections effectively fighting against a cacophony of sounds. Lipson’s production combines crisp electronic percussion, synthesizers and sampled noises to create an intricate arrangement that constantly shifts between elegance and unease.
Claudia Brücken’s cool, expressive vocal is central to the song’s character, giving the romantic conflict a detached, almost cinematic quality. Beneath its polished pop exterior are experimental textures that reward repeated listening.
“Duel” remains one of Propaganda’s most accessible recordings while retaining the mysterious, avant-garde atmosphere that distinguished A Secret Wish. It perfectly captures the meeting point between emotional pop songwriting and the adventurous electronic production associated with ZTT Records in the 1980s.
The song peaked at No. 21 in the UK singles chart on the 8th June 1985.

LYRICS
Eye to eye stand winners and losers
Hurt by envy, cut by greed
Face to face with their own disillusions
The scars of old romances still on their cheeks
And when blow by blow
The passion dies sweet little death
Just have been lies
Some memories of gone by times would still recall the lies
The first cut won’t hurt at all
The second only makes you wonder
The third will have you on your knees
You start bleeding I start screaming
It’s too late the decision is made by fate
Time to prove what forever should last
Whose feelings are so true as to stand the test?
Whose demands are so strong as to parry all attempts?
And when blow by blow
The passion dies sweet little death
Just have been lies
Some memories of gone by times will still recall the lies
The first cut won’t hurt at all
The second only makes you wonder
The third will have you on your knees
You start bleeding I start screaming
The first cut won’t hurt at all
The second only makes you wonder
The third will have you on your knees
You start bleeding I start screaming
The first cut won’t hurt at all
The second only makes you wonder
The third will have you on your knees
You start bleeding I start screaming
