Story Behind The Song
Ultravox’s “Vienna” is one of the defining recordings of the early 1980s, combining electronic experimentation with the grandeur of classical music to create something haunting, atmospheric and unmistakably cinematic. Written by Midge Ure, Billy Currie, Chris Cross and Warren Cann, the song was recorded in 1980 for the album of the same name and produced by Conny Plank alongside the band.
The song began with Warren Cann’s distinctive drum-machine rhythm, which provided the foundation for Billy Currie to develop the dramatic piano and string arrangements. Currie’s classical training was particularly important to the track, with the central viola solo adding a romantic, almost orchestral quality. Synthesizers, electronic bass and guitar then surround the arrangement without overwhelming its spacious atmosphere.
Despite its grand and mysterious sound, the lyrics are essentially about a brief holiday romance. Ure described it as a relationship that blossoms in an unfamiliar, beautiful city before inevitably fading when the couple return to everyday life. The song’s melancholy comes from that sense of something beautiful being temporary.
The accompanying black-and-white video, influenced by the visual atmosphere of The Third Man, reinforced the song’s European, cinematic character. “Vienna” remains a remarkable meeting of synthesizers, classical instrumentation and emotional songwriting, demonstrating just how adventurous British pop could become at the beginning of the 1980s.
It peaked at No. 02 in the UK Singles Chart on 14th February 1981.

LYRICS
We walked in the cold air
Freezing breath on a window pane
Lying and waiting
A man in the dark in a picture frame
So mystic and soulful
A voice reaching out in a piercing cry
It stays with you until
The feeling has gone, only you and I
It means nothing to me
This means nothing to me
Oh, Vienna
The music is weaving
Haunting notes, pizzicato strings
The rhythm is calling
Alone in the night as the daylight brings
A cool empty silence
The warmth of your hand and a cold grey sky
It fades to the distance
The image has gone, only you and I
It means nothing to me
This means nothing to me
Oh, Vienna
This means nothing to me
This means nothing to me
Oh, Vienna
Written By Midge Ure, Billy Currie, Chris Cross, Warren Cann
