ABBA – The Winner Takes It All

ABBA’s “The Winner Takes It All” is one of the group’s most emotionally powerful recordings, replacing their usual exuberant pop style with a deeply poignant portrait of heartbreak and separation. Released in 1980 on the album Super Trouper, the song was written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, with Agnetha Fältskog delivering the lead vocal.

The song began under the working title “The Story of My Life”, with an early version built around a more upbeat, rigid rhythm. Andersson later introduced the descending piano melody that transformed the arrangement, giving it a flowing, almost French chanson-like quality. The revised backing track provided the perfect setting for Ulvaeus’s intensely personal lyrics.

Although the story is fictional, its emotional background was partly influenced by Ulvaeus and Fältskog’s own divorce. This gives Fältskog’s performance an extraordinary sense of vulnerability, as she sings from the perspective of someone accepting the painful end of a relationship while struggling with the feeling that somebody else has emerged victorious.

Musically, the recording builds gradually from piano, keyboards and restrained rhythm into a sweeping arrangement featuring guitar, bass, percussion and strings. Fältskog’s controlled but increasingly impassioned vocal remains the centrepiece, making the song feel intimate despite its grand production.

“The Winner Takes It All” stands as one of ABBA’s most mature and affecting compositions, demonstrating that beneath their polished pop exterior was a remarkable ability to convey genuine emotional complexity.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK charts on 9th August 1980.
