Story Behind The Song
Originally released in 1981, “Pretty In Pink” became one of the defining songs of The Psychedelic Furs and remains their signature recording. Written by frontman Richard Butler and his brother Tim Butler, the song blended post-punk, new wave and art rock influences to create a distinctive sound that helped establish the band as one of the most original acts of the early 1980s. Its poetic lyrics and atmospheric arrangement set it apart from the mainstream pop of the era.
Despite its title, “Pretty In Pink” is not a light-hearted love song. Instead, it tells the story of a young woman searching for acceptance and affection while navigating complicated relationships. Richard Butler’s expressive, slightly raspy vocal delivery gives the song an emotional depth that perfectly complements its introspective lyrics. The combination of shimmering guitars, saxophone and moody production creates an evocative and memorable listening experience.
The song gained a second life in 1986 when filmmaker John Hughes used its title for the hit film Pretty in Pink. To coincide with the movie’s release, The Psychedelic Furs re-recorded the track with a more polished production, introducing it to a new generation of listeners. Today, “Pretty In Pink” is regarded as a classic of the post-punk era, celebrated for its intelligent songwriting, distinctive sound and lasting influence. It remains the recording most closely associated with the band and an enduring favourite among 1980s music fans.
The song peaked at No. 18 in the UK charts on 20th September 1986.

LYRICS
Caroline laughs, and it’s raining all day
She loves to be one of the girls
She lives in the place in the side of our lives
Where nothing is ever put straight
She turns herself ’round, and she smiles, and she says
“This is it, that’s the end of the joke”
And loses herself in her dreaming and sleep
And her lovers walk through in their coats
She’s pretty in pink
Isn’t she?
Pretty in pink
Isn’t she?
All of her lovers all talk of her notes
And the flowers that they never sent
And wasn’t she easy?
Isn’t she pretty in pink?
The one who insists he was first in the line
Is the last to remember her name
He’s walking around in this dress that she wore
She is gone, but the joke’s the same
Pretty in pink
Isn’t she?
Pretty in pink
Isn’t she?
Caroline talks to you softly sometimes
She says, “I love you” and “too much”
She doesn’t have anything you want to steal
Well, nothing you can touch
She waves
She buttons your shirt
The traffic is waiting outside, she hands you this coat
She gives you her clothes, these cars collide
Pretty in pink
Isn’t she?
Pretty in pink
Isn’t she?
Caroline’s on the table screaming
Confidence is in the sea
And all their favorite rags are worn
And other kinds of uniform
They kid you you’re really free
And you know what you want to be
Case of individuality
Until tomorrow
And everything you are
You’ll see
In pure shiny buttons
They put you in this gear
And driveways broken
Doorbell sings in chimes
It plays ‘Anything Goes’
Bells toll in rhyme
