The Eighties Archive

Song Number 0081
Alison Moyet stepped boldly into her solo career in June 1984 with the release of “Love Resurrection”, a track that served as the lead single for her highly anticipated debut album, Alf. Following the sudden and high-profile dissolution of Yazoo, her incredibly successful synth-pop duo with Vince Clarke, the pressure was immense for Moyet to prove she could command the spotlight alone. Co-written with the powerhouse production duo of Steve Jolley and Tony Swain, who had already masterminded massive hits for Bananarama and Imagination, the track instantly solidified her status as one of the most formidable and unique vocal talents of the decade.
The creation of the song was surprisingly spontaneous, born out of a moment of personal frustration. Moyet penned the lyrics immediately following a heated phone argument with a close friend, channelling her emotional exhaustion straight onto the page. She read the words over the phone to Steve Jolley, who quickly called her back with a compelling melody line, and the core of the track was established almost overnight. Musically, “Love Resurrection” represents a masterful fusion of slick mid-1980s pop production and raw, soulful rhythm and blues. Built around a polished, driving bassline and shimmering keyboard chords, the instrumentation provides a bright, accessible framework that perfectly complements Moyet’s commanding contralto voice. Her delivery is bluesy and deeply passionate, bringing a profound sense of emotional weight and maturity that set her apart from many of her contemporary pop peers.
Lyrically, the song uses vivid and slightly provocative metaphors to explore themes of emotional healing, renewal, and the desperate search for hope in a dreary world. Opening with lines about finding a switch to illuminate a dull day, the narrative quickly shifts into the famous, anthemic refrain declaring that everyone needs a love resurrection and a touch of divine intervention. Some lines, such as references to a warm injection to calm the pain or wanting something to grow in her hand, raised eyebrows at the time and were perceived by some as suggestive innuendo. However, Moyet clarified that her writing was heavily influenced by the raw, double-meaning traditions of classic blues legends like Janis Joplin, rather than a deliberate attempt to shock.
The visual promotion for the single was equally striking. The original music video was filmed over three days in the dramatic landscapes of Israel, featuring Moyet wandering through the desert, near the Dead Sea and the Masada Fortress. Though Moyet later expressed a humorous dissatisfaction with her own presence in the video, the vast, arid backdrop beautifully mirrored the lyrical imagery of replenishing a barren land. Commercially, the single was a major success, climbing to number ten on the UK Singles Chart and serving as the perfect launchpad for her album, which eventually hit the number one spot. Decades later, “Love Resurrection” remains a shining example of sophisticated 1980s pop, showcasing a brilliant artist successfully redefining her musical identity.
The song peaked at No. 10 in the UK charts on 28th July 1984.

Lyrics

What can I do to make light of this dull, dull day?
What switch can I pull to illuminate the way?
Show me one direction, I will not question again
For a warm injection is all I need to calm the pain

We all need a love (Resurrection, just a little divine intervention)
We all need a love (Resurrection), just a little divine (Intervention)

What seed must I sow to replenish this barren land?
Teach me to harvest, I want you to grow in my hand
Let’s be optimistic, let’s say that we won’t toil in vain
If we pull together, we’ll never fall apart again

We all need a love (Resurrection, just a little divine intervention)
We all need a love (Resurrection), just a little divine (Intervention)

We need a love
Resurrection
(We need a love, love, love)
Just a little divine (Intervention)

Show me one direction, I will not question again, no, no
For a warm injection is all I need to calm the pain

We all need a love (Resurrection, just a little divine intervention)
We all need a love (Resurrection), just a little divine intervention

We need a love
Resurrection
Eh-eh
Mm-mm

We need a love (We need a love resurrection, just a little divine intervention)
Resurrection (We need a love resurrection, just a little divine intervention)
(We need a love resurrection, just a little divine intervention)
Resurrection (We need a love resurrection)
