Story Behind The Song

Released in September 1985, “If I Was” became the biggest solo hit of Midge Ure’s career and his only UK No. 1 single. Taken from his second solo album, The Gift, the song demonstrated his ability to combine thoughtful songwriting with lush synthesiser-driven production, building on the success he had already achieved as the frontman of Ultravox. Its polished sound and emotional depth helped it become one of the defining British pop records of the mid-1980s.

Written and produced by Ure, “If I Was” is a heartfelt declaration of love and longing. The lyrics explore themes of devotion and self-sacrifice, imagining the lengths someone would go to in order to win another person’s affection. Ure’s distinctive, expressive voice is complemented by atmospheric keyboards, soaring guitar lines and a dramatic arrangement that builds steadily to an uplifting chorus.

The single entered the UK Singles Chart in September 1985 before climbing to the top, where it spent a week at No. 1. It remains the only solo chart-topper of Ure’s career and is widely regarded as his finest individual recording. Although he continued to enjoy success as both a solo artist and with Ultravox, “If I Was” remains his signature solo hit. Today, it is remembered as one of the standout British pop singles of the decade, admired for its powerful melody, heartfelt lyrics and timeless production.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK charts on 5th October 1985.

LYRICS

If I was (if I was)
A better man (a better man)
Would fellow men (would fellow men)
Take me to their hearts?
If I was (if I was)
A stronger man (a stronger man)
Carrying the weight of popular demand
Tell me, would that alarm her?
I’d never harm her at all

If I was a soldier
Captive arms I’d lay before her
If I was a sailor
Seven oceans I’d sail to her

If I was (if I was)
A wiser man (a wiser man)
Would other men (would other men)
Reach out and touch me?

If I was (if I was)
A kinder man (a kinder man)
Dishing up love for a hungry world
Tell me, would that appease her?
I want to please her again

If I was a painter
I’d paint a world that couldn’t taint her
If I was a leader
On food of love from above, I would feed her
If I was a poet
All my love in burning words, I would show it
If I was her lover
Her eyes in kisses, I would cover

Come here my baby
Oh, they can’t touch you now
I’ll keep you safe and warm
I’ll never leave you at all

Come here my baby
Oh, they won’t touch you
Dishing up love for a hungry world
Tell me, would that appease you?
I want to please you again

If I was a soldier
Captive arms I’d lay before her
If I was a sailor
Seven oceans I’d sail to her
If I was a painter
I’d paint a world that couldn’t taint her
If I was a leader
On food of love from above, I would feed her
If I was a poet
All my love in burning words, I would show it
