Story Behind The Song

David Bowie’s “Ashes To Ashes” is one of his most intriguing recordings, revisiting the character of Major Tom from “Space Oddity” while transforming the original space-age hero into a much darker and more troubled figure. Released in 1980 as the lead single from Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps), the song was written by Bowie and produced with Tony Visconti.

Rather than simply continuing the story of Major Tom, Bowie used the character as a vehicle for exploring addiction, isolation and disillusionment. The song also reflected Bowie’s own complicated relationship with his past, with its fragmented imagery and nursery-rhyme-like structure creating an unsettling, dreamlike atmosphere.

Musically, “Ashes To Ashes” combines synthesizers, guitar, bass, piano and electronic textures with a distinctive, slightly otherworldly production. Chuck Hammer’s guitar synthesizer contributes to the futuristic sound, while George Murray’s bass and Dennis Davis’s drumming provide a strong rhythmic foundation. The finished recording manages to sound both experimental and remarkably accessible.

The accompanying video, co-directed by Bowie and David Mallet, became almost as influential as the song itself. Bowie appears in his famous Pierrot costume alongside bizarre, surreal imagery and members of London’s emerging New Romantic scene. Its striking visual style perfectly complemented the song’s strange, melancholic atmosphere.

“Ashes To Ashes” remains a fascinating example of Bowie reinventing his own mythology while simultaneously looking back at the person he had been.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK charts on 23rd August 1980.

LYRICS

Do you remember a guy that’s been
In such an early song?
I’ve heard a rumour from Ground Control
Oh, no, don’t say it’s true
They got a message from the Action Man
“I’m happy, hope you’re happy too
I’ve loved all I’ve needed, love
Sordid details following”

The shrieking of nothing is killing
The shrieking of nothing is killing
Just pictures of Jap girls in synthesis
Just pictures of Jap girls in synthesis
And I ain’t got no money and I ain’t got no hair
I ain’t got no money and I ain’t got no hair
But I’m hoping to kick, but the planet is glowing
But I’m hoping to kick, but the planet is glowing

Ashes to ash and funk to funky
We know Major Tom’s a junkie
Strung out in heaven’s high
Hitting an all-time low

Time and again, I tell myself
I’ll stay clean tonight
But the little green wheels are following me
Oh, no, not again
I’m stuck with a valuable friend
“I’m happy, hope you’re happy too”
One flash of light, but no smoking pistol

I’ve never done good things
I’ve never done good things
I’ve never done bad things
I’ve never done bad things
I never did anything out of the blue, woah woah
I never did anything out of the blue, woah woah
Want an axe to break the ice
I want an axe to break the ice
Wanna come down right now
I want to come down right now

Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom’s a junkie
Strung out in heaven’s high
Hitting an all-time low

My mama said to get things done
You’d better not mess with Major Tom
My mama said to get things done
You’d better not mess with Major Tom
My mama said to get things done
You’d better not mess with Major Tom
My mama said to get things done
You’d better not mess with Major Tom
My mama said
