Story Behind The Song
Altered Images’ 1983 single “Bring Me Closer” represents a dramatic and sophisticated pivot for the Scottish new wave band. Moving away from the hyper-frenetic, quirky post-punk sounds of their earlier hits like “Happy Birthday,” this track embraced a glitzy, late-night disco aesthetic. Released as the second single from their third studio album, Bite, the song benefited from the lush, widescreen production of legendary producer Tony Visconti.
Musically, the track relies on a velvety arrangement of driving congas, synth strings, a funk-infused wah-wah guitar rhythm, and a prominent saxophone.
Frontwoman Clare Grogan delivers her signature vocals with a more mature, glammed-up sensuality that mirrors the track’s cinematic, James Bond-inspired atmosphere. Beneath the sparkling, danceable surface, “Bring Me Closer” presents a sharp juxtaposition with its melancholic lyrics. The words explore themes of unease, disillusionment in relationships, and deceit, highlighted by lines about losing oneself in a partner’s lies. Though it didn’t chart as high as the band’s other songs on the UK charts upon release, the track has aged into a beloved synth-pop gem that showcases the band’s versatility.
The song peaked at No. 29 in the UK Singles Chart on 4th June 1983.

LYRICS
If I could achieve what I do with these
I wouldn’t ask you for anything else
Bring me closer
Bring me closer
Please
Bring me closer
I though we were friends
It never start
It only ends and I’m losing everything I own
You took me nowhere
You took me nowhere
You took me nowhere
You took me nowhere
Something that you do to me fills me with unease
Something that you do to me
Do to me
Again and again
I lose myself again inside you and your lie
Bring me closer
Bring me closer
Please
Bring me closer
If I could achieve
If I could achieve
If I could achieve
Bring me closer
Bring me closer
Please
Bring me closer
Please
Bring me closer
Something that you do to me fills me with unease
Something that you do to me fills me with unease
Something that you do to me
Do to me
Do to me
Do to me
