Story Behind The Song

Released in the autumn of 1986, “I’ve Been Losing You” marked a darker, more dramatic direction for Norwegian trio A-ha. Issued as the lead single from their second album, Scoundrel Days, the song surprised listeners who expected another bright pop anthem in the style of their earlier hits. Instead, it delivered an intense blend of atmospheric synthesizers, driving guitars and a haunting vocal performance from Morten Harket, creating one of the band’s most distinctive recordings.

The lyrics are deliberately ambiguous, telling a mysterious story filled with regret, guilt and emotional turmoil. Rather than offering a straightforward narrative, the song leaves much of its meaning open to interpretation, which has helped maintain its intrigue over the years. Musically, the contrast between the brooding verses and the powerful, soaring chorus showcases the band’s ability to combine sophisticated songwriting with memorable pop melodies.

“I’ve Been Losing You” became a major success across Europe and demonstrated that A-ha were capable of far more than polished synth-pop. It helped establish Scoundrel Days as a more mature and adventurous album, broadening the group’s artistic reputation. Today, the song is widely regarded by fans as one of a-ha’s finest recordings, admired for its emotional depth, striking production and the commanding vocal performance that remains one of Morten Harket’s very best.

The song peaked at No. 08 in the UK charts on 11th October 1986.

LYRICS

It wasn’t the rain
That made no difference
And I could have sworn it wasn’t me
Yet I did it all so coldly
…almost slowly
Plain for all to see

Oh c’mon please now
Talk to me
Tell me; things I could find helpful
How can I stop now…
Is there nothing I can do
I have lost my way
I’ve been losing you

I can still hear our screams competing
You’re hissing your s’s like a snake
Now in the mirror stands
Half a man
I thought no one could break

It wasn’t the rain
That made no difference
…nervously drumming on, run away
But I want the guilt to get me
Thoughts to wreck me
Preying on my mind

So, please now
Talk to me
Tell me; things I could find helpful
For how can I stop now…
Is there nothing I can do
I have lost my way
I’ve been losing you
