Bronski BeatBronski Beat were a groundbreaking British synth-pop trio formed in London in 1983 by Jimmy Somerville, Steve Bronski, and Larry Steinbachek. All openly gay, the group uniquely combined club-friendly, danceable electronic beats with explicit, unapologetic socio-political commentary. Guided by Somerville’s signature, piercing falsetto, they scored a monumental international hit in 1984 with their debut single, “Smalltown Boy”, a poignant anthem about queer alienation. Their gold-certified debut album, The Age of Consent, yielded further classic hits like “Why?” and a famous Marc Almond collaboration on “I Feel Love” before Somerville departed in 1985.
