Ultravox Ultravox are a pioneering British new wave band formed in London in 1974 as Tiger Lily. Initially fronted by John Foxx, they merged experimental art-rock with punk textures. However, their definitive commercial breakthrough came after Midge Ure took over as lead vocalist in 1979. Blending driving synthesizers with theatrical vocals, they became architects of the New Romantic movement. Between 1980 and 1986, the band scored seven UK top-ten albums and seventeen top-40 singles, led by their iconic 1981 masterpiece “Vienna”, which famously spent weeks at number two.
