Echo & The Bunnymen – The Killing Moon

Released in 1984 as the lead single from Echo & The Bunnymen’s fourth album, Ocean Rain, “The Killing Moon” is one of the defining songs of the British post-punk era. Written by Ian McCulloch, Will Sergeant, Les Pattinson and Pete de Freitas, it combines atmospheric guitar, rolling bass, restrained drums and sweeping orchestral touches to create a sound that is both mysterious and grand.

McCulloch has described the song as being about fate, destiny and the struggle between human will and forces beyond our control. He famously said the opening lyric came to him almost fully formed after waking one morning, and he subsequently developed the music around it. The song’s celestial imagery gives it an otherworldly quality, while McCulloch’s deep, dramatic vocal adds to its sense of melancholy and mystery.

Will Sergeant’s distinctive guitar introduction was almost accidental, originating from something he played while tuning up. Its unusual, Eastern-tinged character became one of the song’s most recognisable features. The recording also underwent significant changes, with Pete de Freitas replacing the original drum performance and playing with brushes to give the rhythm a gentler, jazz-influenced feel.

The result is an atmospheric and timeless piece of post-punk that perfectly captures the darker, more sophisticated side of Eighties alternative music.

The song peaked at No. 09 in the UK charts on 2nd February 1984.
