Story Behind The Song

Erasure’s “Sometimes” is one of the songs that established the duo’s distinctive blend of electronic pop, heartfelt songwriting and dance-floor energy. Released in 1986 as the first single from their second album, The Circus, it was written by Vince Clarke and Andy Bell and produced by Flood.

The song centres on the emotional uncertainty of a passionate relationship, balancing desire and intimacy with the painful realisation that love can also bring disappointment. Bell’s lyrics describe a relationship that is physically close but emotionally complicated, while the repeated refrain about a broken heart gives the song a surprisingly vulnerable quality beneath its upbeat surface.

Musically, “Sometimes” showcases Clarke’s talent for creating bright, melodic electronic arrangements. Analogue synthesizers and electronic rhythms provide the foundation, while acoustic guitar adds warmth and a more organic texture. A memorable trumpet part, performed by Guy Barker, adds another unexpected element to the arrangement. Bell’s soaring, expressive vocal completes the combination, turning the simple melody into something immediately recognisable.

The song also marked an important moment in the partnership between Clarke and Bell. According to the pair, “Sometimes” was one of their first collaborations where they immediately felt they had created something special. The original chorus even used different words before the title was adopted. With its infectious melody, emotional lyrics and unmistakable Erasure sound, “Sometimes” remains a quintessential piece of 1980s synth-pop.

The song peaked at No. 02 in the UK charts on 13th December 1986.

LYRICS

Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh…

It’s not the way you lead me
By the hand into the bedroom
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
It’s not the way you throw your clothes
Upon the bathroom floor
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)

Been thinking about you, I just couldn’t wait to see
Fling my arms around you, as we fall in ecstasy

Ooh, sometimes
The truth is harder, than the pain inside, yeah
Ooh, sometimes
It’s the broken heart, that decides

It’s not the way you caress me
Toy with my affection
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
It’s not my sense of emptiness
You fill with your desire
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)

Climb in bed beside me, we can lock the world outside
Touch me satisfy me, warm your body next to mine

Ooh, sometimes
The truth is harder, than the pain inside, yeah
Ooh, sometimes
It’s the broken heart, that decides

(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Ooh, sometimes
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh) The truth is harder, than the pain inside, yeah
Ooh, sometimes
It’s the broken heart, that decides
Ooh, sometimes
The truth is harder, than the pain inside, yeah
Ooh, sometimes
It’s the broken heart, that decides
Ooh, sometimes
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh) The truth is harder, than the pain inside, yeah
Ooh, sometimes
It’s the broken heart, that decides
Ooh, sometimes
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh) The truth is harder, than the pain inside, yeah
Ooh, sometimes
It’s the broken heart, that decides
