Story Behind The Song

Released in 1983, “Relax” was the debut single by Frankie Goes To Hollywood and one of the most controversial and influential records of the 1980s. Written by the band’s members and produced by Trevor Horn, the song was included on the album Welcome To The Pleasuredome. Its combination of driving electronic rhythms, powerful rock influences and cutting-edge studio production created a bold, distinctive sound that helped redefine British pop music. Initially attracting modest attention, the single’s fortunes changed dramatically following widespread publicity surrounding its provocative lyrics and artwork.

The song is driven by an infectious bass line, layered synthesisers and Trevor Horn’s meticulous production, while Holly Johnson delivers a commanding vocal performance full of confidence and attitude. Although widely interpreted as celebrating sexual freedom and desire, the lyrics remain deliberately ambiguous, allowing listeners to draw their own conclusions. The record’s energetic arrangement, dramatic build-ups and unforgettable chorus made it an instant dancefloor favourite, while its innovative sound pushed the boundaries of mainstream pop production.

The decision by the BBC to restrict airplay because of concerns over the song’s lyrical content only increased public curiosity and fuelled its success. “Relax” went on to become one of the defining records of the decade and established Frankie Goes To Hollywood as one of Britain’s most talked-about bands. Today, it is recognised as an iconic 1980s anthem, celebrated for its groundbreaking production, cultural impact and enduring influence on electronic and dance-pop music.

The song peaked at No. 01 on the UK charts on 28th January 1984.

LYRICS

Mine
Give it to you one time, now
Well
Whoa
Well, now

Relax, don’t do it
When you want to go to it
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to come
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to suck it, chew it
Relax, don’t do it

When you want to come
When you want to come

Relax, don’t do it
When you want to go to it
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to come
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to suck it, chew it
Relax, don’t do it

When you want to come
Come on
Ohh

But shoot it in the right direction
Make makin’ it your intention (Ooh yeah, ooh yeah)
Live those dreams
Scheme those schemes
Got to hit me (Hit me), hit me (Hit me)
Hit me with those laser beams
Ow, ow, ow
Laser beam me
One, two

Relax, don’t do it
Relax
When you want to come
Come, uhh, woo

Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow
I’m coming
I’m coming, yeah

Relax, don’t do it (Ow, once you’re inside of me)
When you want to go to it
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to come (Hey)
Relax, don’t do it
When you want to suck it, chew it (Wo-ho)
Relax, don’t do it, no

When you want to come
When you want to come
When you want to come
Come, huah!

Ow, ow, ow, ow, woo
Ow, ow, ow, yeah
The scene of love, feel it

Relax, don’t do it
When you want to go to it
Relax, don’t do it (Ow, ow, yeah)
Relax, don’t do it (Hiya, hiya)
When you want to go to it
Relax, don’t do it

Now’s the time, it’s party time (Hey)
Come
