Story Behind The Song

Released in 1986, “The Honeythief” was the breakthrough single for Scottish band Hipsway and remains the song for which they are best remembered. Taken from their self-titled debut album, the track blended polished pop, rock and blue-eyed soul with an infectious groove, creating a distinctive sound that stood out among the guitar-based music of the mid-1980s. Led by vocalist Grahame Skinner, Hipsway combined stylish songwriting with a sophisticated musical approach that earned them critical acclaim.

Written by the band, “The Honeythief” is an upbeat song about love, attraction and emotional vulnerability. Its playful lyrics are matched by an irresistible melody, bright guitar work and an energetic rhythm section, while Skinner’s soulful vocal performance gives the track warmth and personality. The polished production and memorable chorus helped make it one of the most recognisable Scottish pop recordings of the decade.

Although Hipsway released further singles and enjoyed a reputation as an accomplished live act, “The Honeythief” remained their defining recording. The band dissolved a few years later, but the song has continued to enjoy lasting popularity through radio airplay and numerous 1980s compilations. Today, it is regarded as a hidden gem of the era, celebrated for its catchy melody, refined musicianship and timeless appeal. More than three decades after its release, “The Honeythief” remains a favourite among fans of sophisticated British pop and stands as a lasting reminder of Hipsway’s talent and originality.

The song peaked at No. 17 on the UK charts on 22nd March 1986.

LYRICS

Sleek, big cat
Bible black
Honeysuckle
I would never deny

Well, the light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get
The light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get

Pass through the heat
Come on, come on and pass
Through the heat
Catch a thief
A honeythief
I am a thief
A honeythief
Oh, yeah

The light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get
The light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get

That’s the price you pay
When love gets in the way
Stealth in the night
I come to steal
With stealth in the night
You got the sugar to satisfy
I am the man you can never deny

Well, the light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get
The light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get

The honeythief
The honeythief
I don’t get
The honeythief
I don’t get
The honeythief

The light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get
The light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get

The light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get
The light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get

The light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get
The light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get

The light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get
The light of deep regret
Let me see what I don’t get
