Story Behind The Song
Released in 1989, “Lambada” became the signature song of Kaoma and one of the defining sounds of the late 1980s. Sung by Brazilian vocalist Loalwa Braz, the recording combined Brazilian and Caribbean influences with a vibrant dance rhythm, creating an infectious soundtrack for the worldwide lambada craze. The group itself was a multicultural project assembled in France by producers Jean Karakos and Olivier Lorsac, bringing together Brazilian, African and Caribbean musicians.
The song’s irresistible rhythm and sensual dance style were central to its appeal. Braz’s distinctive vocal performance gives the recording warmth and character, while accordion, guitar, percussion, bass and keyboards combine to create its instantly recognisable tropical sound. The accompanying video, featuring young dancers Chico and Roberta alongside Kaoma, helped turn the lambada into a major international dance phenomenon.
Behind the carefree summer image, however, the song had a complicated history. “Lambada” was based on “Llorando Se Fue”, written by Bolivian brothers Ulises and Gonzalo Hermosa and originally recorded by Los Kjarkas in 1981. A Portuguese adaptation, “Chorando Se Foi”, had been recorded by Brazilian singer Márcia Ferreira in 1986. Kaoma’s version subsequently became the subject of successful copyright actions brought by the original rights holders. The song is credited to songwriter Chico De Olivera.
Despite the controversy, Kaoma’s “Lambada” remains an unforgettable late-1980s dance classic, remembered for its infectious rhythm, exotic atmosphere and the worldwide dance craze it helped create.
The song peaked at No. 04 in the UK charts on 9th December 1989.

LYRICS
Chorando se foi quem um dia só me fez chorar
Chorando se foi quem um dia só me fez chorar
Chorando estará ao lembrar de um amor
Que um dia não soube cuidar
Chorando estará ao lembrar de um amor
Que um dia não soube cuidar
A recordação vai estar com ele aonde for
A recordação vai estar pra sempre aonde for
Dança, sol e mar guardarei no olhar
O amor faz perder encontrar
Lambando estarei ao lembrar que este amor
Por um dia um instante foi rei
A recordação vai estar com ele aonde for
A recordação vai estar pra sempre aonde for
Chorando estará ao lembrar de um amor
Que um dia não soube cuidar
Canção, riso e dor, melodia de amor
Um momento que fica no ar
Ai, ai, ai
Dançando Lambada!
