Story Behind The Song

Released in 1988, “Going Back To Cali” was one of LL Cool J’s most distinctive recordings and marked a more atmospheric direction for the pioneering rapper. Produced by Rick Rubin, the song was originally recorded for the soundtrack to the film Less Than Zero before later appearing on LL Cool J’s 1989 album Walking With A Panther. Built around a hypnotic electronic groove, the track demonstrated how hip-hop could incorporate sophisticated production and melodic textures while retaining its rhythmic identity.

The song reflects LL Cool J’s fascination with California and the contrasting experiences of life on the East and West Coasts. Rather than presenting a straightforward celebration, the lyrics balance admiration with uncertainty, describing the glamour, lifestyle and contradictions he encounters. His relaxed, conversational delivery gives the recording a cool, reflective quality, while the atmospheric production creates a spacious backdrop that feels very different from the harder-edged rap of his earlier work.

“Going Back To Cali” became one of LL Cool J’s signature songs and helped broaden his appeal beyond hip-hop’s traditional audience. In the UK, the track became a notable chart entry during the late 1980s and introduced British listeners to a more melodic and introspective side of his music. Its memorable refrain, distinctive beat and laid-back West Coast atmosphere have ensured its lasting reputation. Today, it remains an important recording from hip-hop’s golden era and a defining moment in LL Cool J’s career. The single was released as a AA single with the song “Jack The Ripper”.

The song peaked at No. 37 in the UK charts on 27th February 1988.

LYRICS

I’m going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I’m going back to Cali… hmm, I don’t think so
I’m going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I’m going back to Cali… I don’t think so

Going back to Cali, stylin’, profilin’
Dialin’, and smilin’, while in the sun
The top is down, on the black Corvette
And it’s fly, ’cause it’s sittin’ on Daytons
Nardi steering wheel, plushed out, gold-leaf phantom top
And three girls waiting
Cool wind’s blowin’, the chrome is shinin’
Passing all the cars on the way
Movement of the wind, back wheels spin
Pop in a cassette and push play

I’m going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I’m going back to Cali… hey, y’all, I don’t think so
I’m going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I’m going back to Cali

I’m going back to Cali, shakin’ ’em, bakin’ ’em
Takin’ ’em to spots they never before hung
I know a place off Sunset, it’s a trip
Where the AC’s cold, but the girls still strip
The record skipped, but this girl kept dancin’
Prancin’, grindin’, grinnin,’ romancin’
I asked her to the barn, so we could hit the hay
I wanna do this, Brutus, but I don’t wanna pay

I’m going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I’m going back to Cali… man, I don’t think so
I’m going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I’m going back to Cali

I’m going back to Cali, risin’, surprisin’
Advisin’, realizin’ she’s sizin’ me up
Her bikini, small; heels, tall
She said she liked the ocean
She showed me a beach, gave me a peach
And pulled out the suntan lotion
Now, my Corvette is fast, but this girl was faster
She’s lookin’ for a real good time
I said, “Close your eyes, I got a surprise”
And I ran away with the bottle of wine

I’m going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I’m going back to Cali… I don’t think so
I’m going back to Cali, Cali, Cali
I’m going back to Cali… excuse me, I don’t think so
