Story Behind The Song
Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder’s “Ebony And Ivory” brought together two of popular music’s most celebrated songwriters for a message of racial harmony, equality and peaceful coexistence. Released in 1982, the song paired McCartney’s melodic craftsmanship with Wonder’s unmistakable soulful voice, creating a polished pop duet built around a simple but enduring idea.
Written by McCartney, the song takes its title from the black and white keys of a piano, using them as a metaphor for people of different backgrounds living together in harmony. The lyrics suggest that, just as both colours are needed to make music, humanity benefits from diversity and mutual understanding. Its message is direct and accessible, reflecting McCartney’s desire to address racial prejudice through a song that could reach a broad audience.
Musically, the recording combines gentle piano, synthesizers and a restrained rhythm section, allowing the two singers to share the spotlight. McCartney delivers the melody with characteristic warmth, while Wonder adds vocal richness and emotional depth. Their contrasting styles complement one another, reinforcing the song’s theme through the collaboration itself.
The recording appeared on McCartney’s album Tug Of War, produced by George Martin, whose careful arrangement gave the track its smooth, understated sound. The accompanying video also emphasised the partnership between the two performers, presenting them together in a relaxed, informal setting.
Although its message is expressed in straightforward terms, “Ebony And Ivory” remains a recognisable statement of the hope that people can overcome prejudice and coexist peacefully. Its central metaphor continues to offer a simple reminder that differences need not prevent harmony.
The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 24th April 1982.

SONG LYRICS
Ebony and ivory
Live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard
Oh Lord, why don’t we?
We all know that people are the same wherever you go
There is good and bad in everyone
And we learn to live, we learn to give each other
What we need to survive together alive
Ebony and ivory
Live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard
Oh Lord, why don’t we?
Ebony, ivory
Living in perfect harmony
Ebony, ivory, ooh
We all know that people are the same wherever you go
There is good and bad (Mm, hmm) in everyone
We learn to live when we learn to give each other
What we need to survive together alive
Ebony and ivory
Live together in perfect harmony
Side by side on my piano keyboard
Oh Lord, why don’t we?
Side by side on my piano keyboard
Oh Lord, why don’t we?
Mm, hmm
Ebony, ivory
Living in perfect harmony
Ebony, ivory
Living in perfect harmony Ivory
Ebony, ivory Ebony
Living in perfect harmony Whoa-oh-oh, ivory
Ebony, ivory Ebony
Living in perfect harmony Whoa-oh, ivory
