Pet Shop Boys – Domino Dancing

Released in 1988, “Domino Dancing” was the first single from the Pet Shop Boys’ third studio album, Introspective. Written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, the song marked an adventurous change in direction, drawing heavily on Latin pop, salsa, disco and the emerging Latin freestyle sound. The duo travelled to Miami to record with producer Lewis A. Martinée, whose work with Exposé had particularly impressed them.

The song centres on jealousy and romantic insecurity. Tennant portrays someone watching his partner attract the attention of other people, becoming increasingly suspicious and anxious as the relationship begins to fall apart. The title came from a holiday in the Caribbean, where a friend would celebrate winning at dominoes with a little dance. Tennant later developed the idea of people falling one after another like dominoes.

Musically, “Domino Dancing” is unusually rich for a Pet Shop Boys recording. Latin percussion, salsa-style piano, acoustic guitar, Cuban brass and intricate electronic rhythms are woven together with Lowe’s synthesiser work. The result is warm, colourful and rhythmically complex, while Tennant’s cool vocal delivery provides a striking contrast to the exuberant arrangement.

The accompanying video, filmed in Puerto Rico, embraced the song’s sensual Latin atmosphere and presented a dramatic story of jealousy and rivalry. “Domino Dancing” remains one of the duo’s most adventurous recordings, demonstrating their willingness to absorb influences from outside synth-pop and transform them into something distinctly their own.

The song peaked at No. 07 in the UK singles chart on the 1st October 1988.
