Story Behind The Song

Released in 1986, “Suburbia” was one of the most distinctive songs from the Pet Shop Boys’ debut album, Please. Written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, the song was inspired by Penelope Spheeris’s film of the same name, which portrayed disenchanted and rebellious young people living in suburban Los Angeles. Pet Shop Boys used that starting point to create a much broader portrait of boredom, frustration and violence hidden beneath the apparently comfortable surface of suburban life.

The contrast between the music and lyrics is central to the song’s appeal. Chris Lowe created an infectious, almost euphoric electronic backing, while Tennant’s detached vocal describes a world of vandalism, police sirens, frustrated teenagers and deteriorating communities. The duo deliberately wanted a “hard lyric” against a softer, catchy tune, creating an unsettling tension between the upbeat music and darker subject matter.

The original album version was later completely re-recorded for the single, with producer Julian Mendelsohn transforming it into a much more dramatic and cinematic production. Real riot sounds, barking dogs, breaking glass, explosions and saxophone from Gary Barnacle were incorporated into the new arrangement, giving the recording a chaotic, almost film-like atmosphere.

“Suburbia” remains an excellent example of the Pet Shop Boys’ ability to disguise sharp social observation beneath accessible electronic pop. Its combination of catchy melody, dark imagery and inventive production makes it one of their most memorable recordings of the 1980s.

The song peaked at No. 08 in the UK singles chart on the 18th October 1986.

LYRICS

Lost in the high street, where the dogs run
Roaming suburban boys
Mother’s got her hairdo to be done
She says they’re too old for toys
Stood by the bus stop with a felt pen
In this suburban Hell
And in the distance a police car
To break the suburban spell

Let’s take a ride and run with the dogs tonight
In suburbia
You can’t hide, run with the dogs tonight
In suburbia

Break the window by the town hall
Listen, a siren screams
There in the distance like a roll call
Of all the suburban dreams

Let’s take a ride and run with the dogs tonight
In suburbia
You can’t hide, run with the dogs tonight
In suburbia

I only wanted something else to do but hang around
I only wanted something else to do but hang around
I only wanted something else to do but hang around
I only wanted something else to do but hang around

It’s on the front page of the papers:
“This Is Their Hour of Need”
Where’s a policeman when you need one
To blame the colour TV?

Let’s take a ride and run with the dogs tonight
In suburbia
You can’t hide, run with the dogs tonight
In suburbia

Take a ride and run with the dogs tonight
In suburbia
You can’t hide, run with the dogs tonight
In suburbia

Run with the dogs tonight
In suburbia
You can’t hide
In suburbia
In suburbia
In suburbia
In suburbia
In suburbia
