Story Behind The Song

Released in 1981, “I Missed Again” was the second single from Phil Collins’ debut solo album, Face Value. Written by Collins and produced by him in collaboration with Hugh Padgham, the song introduced a more upbeat side to his solo work following the atmospheric intensity of “In The Air Tonight.” Blending pop, rock, soul and rhythm and blues influences, it showcased Collins’ versatility as a songwriter and performer, while establishing the warm, accessible style that would become a hallmark of his solo career.

Originally conceived under the working title “I Miss You, Babe,” the song evolved from a straightforward ballad into a lively reflection on the disappointments and frustrations of failed relationships. Phil Collins delivers the lyrics with charm, wit and a touch of self-deprecating humour, transforming heartbreak into an infectious pop anthem. The track is driven by a punchy rhythm section, bright keyboards and a memorable horn arrangement supplied by the Earth, Wind & Fire brass section, giving it an energetic, soulful feel. Collins’ distinctive drumming and effortless vocal performance complete a recording that is both polished and full of personality.

“I Missed Again” became Collins’ second major solo hit and helped establish Face Value as one of the standout albums of 1981. The song demonstrated that he could step confidently into the spotlight as a solo artist while moving beyond comparisons with Genesis. Today, it remains a favourite among fans, celebrated for its irresistible groove, clever songwriting and timeless blend of pop and soul.

The song peaked at No. 14 in the UK charts on 21st March 1981.

LYRICS

So you finally came right out and said it, girl
What took you so long?
It was in your eyes
That look’s been there for far too long

I’m waiting in line
Would you say if I was wasting my time?

Did I miss again?
I think I missed again, oh-ho-oh

I think about it from time to time
When I’m lonely and on my own
I try to forget and yet still rush to the telephone

And I’m waiting in line
But would you say if I was wasting my time?

Oh, did I miss again?
I think I missed again, oh-ho-oh
Oh, I missed again, oh-oh-oh, ho
I think I missed again, oh-ho-oh

Well, it feels like something you want so bad
And then you think you’ve got it
But it’s something you already had
And you can feel it all around you
But it’s something you just can’t touch, oh-ho-ho
And I can feel it coming at me
Yes, I can feel it coming at me

Oh, did I miss again?
I think I missed again, oh-ho-oh
Oh, I missed again, oh-oh-oh-ho
I think I missed again, oh-ho-oh

Seems I’m waiting in line
But would you say if I was wasting my time?

Did I miss again?
I think I missed again, oh-ho-oh
Oh, I missed again, ah-oh ho-oh
I think I missed again, oh-ho-oh
Oh, I missed again, ah-oh ho-oh
I think I missed again, oh-ho-oh
Oh, I missed again, ah-oh ho-oh
I think I missed again, oh-ho-oh
Oh, I missed again, ah-oh ho-oh
I think I missed again, oh-ho-oh
