Story Behind The Song
Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick In The Wall” remains one of the most recognisable recordings in rock history, combining a memorable groove with a powerful criticism of institutional control and rigid education. Featured on the band’s 1979 concept album The Wall, the song forms part of a larger narrative exploring isolation, emotional trauma and the psychological barriers people construct around themselves.
Written by bassist Roger Waters, the song’s best-known section, Part 2, focuses on the oppressive school environment experienced by the album’s central character. Waters drew inspiration from his own unhappy experiences of education, portraying teachers as figures who discourage independent thought and demand conformity. The repeated line about not needing education became an enduring expression of youthful rebellion, although the song’s message extends beyond simply rejecting school.
Musically, Part 2 is built around a steady disco-influenced rhythm, restrained guitar work and a distinctive bassline. Its most memorable feature is the children’s choir, recorded with pupils from Islington Green School in London. Their spirited performance gives the chorus an authentic sense of collective defiance, contrasting with the controlled atmosphere described in the lyrics.
The song also demonstrates Pink Floyd’s ability to combine accessible melodies with ambitious conceptual storytelling. Its polished production and instantly recognisable refrain helped bring the album’s darker themes to a broad audience.
More than four decades later, “Another Brick In The Wall” remains relevant wherever authority suppresses individuality. Its enduring power lies in the tension between its infectious rhythm and its uncompromising challenge to conformity, making it far more than a conventional rock anthem.
The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 5th January 1980.

SONG LYRICS
We don’t need no education
We don’t need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teacher, leave them kids alone
Hey, teacher, leave them kids alone
All in all, it’s just another brick in the wall
All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall
We don’t need no education
We don’t need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers, leave them kids alone
Hey, teacher, leave us kids alone!
All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall
All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall
