Story Behind The Song
Released in 1981, “Keep On Loving You” was the lead single from REO Speedwagon’s breakthrough album, Hi Infidelity. Written by lead vocalist Kevin Cronin and produced by Kevin Beamish, Kevin Cronin, Alan Gratzer and Gary Richrath, the song became the band’s signature power ballad and helped propel them to international success. Combining heartfelt lyrics with polished rock production, it showcased a more melodic and emotional side of the Illinois band while retaining the strong musicianship that had earned them a loyal following throughout the 1970s.
The song was inspired by Kevin Cronin’s determination to stand by someone he loved despite the challenges they faced together. His sincere vocal performance gives the lyrics a powerful sense of devotion and vulnerability, while Gary Richrath’s tasteful guitar work, Neal Doughty’s atmospheric keyboards and the solid rhythm section create an uplifting, emotionally charged arrangement. Beginning with a gentle piano introduction before building into a soaring chorus, the song perfectly balances tenderness with arena rock power, making it one of the defining ballads of the era.
“Keep On Loving You” transformed REO Speedwagon into one of the biggest rock bands of the early 1980s and became their first major international hit. Its timeless melody, heartfelt message and polished production have ensured its enduring popularity across generations of rock fans. Today, it remains one of the most recognisable power ballads ever recorded, celebrated for its emotional honesty, memorable chorus and Kevin Cronin’s passionate vocal performance, securing its place as a classic of 1980s rock.
It peaked at No. 07 in the UK Singles Chart on 16th May 1981.

LYRICS
You should’ve seen by the look in my eyes, baby
There was something missing
You should’ve known by the tone of my voice, maybe
But you didn’t listen
You played dead
But you never bled
Instead you lay still in the grass
All coiled up and hissing
And though I know all about those men
Still I don’t remember
‘Cause it was us, baby, way before them
And we’re still together
And I meant, every word I said
When I said that I love you
I meant that I love you forever
And I’m gonna keep on loving you
‘Cause it’s the only thing I wanna do
I don’t wanna sleep
I just wanna keep on loving you
And I meant, every word I said
When I said that I love you
I meant that I love you forever
And I’m gonna keep on loving you
‘Cause it’s the only thing I wanna do
I don’t wanna sleep
I just wanna keep on loving you
Baby, I’m gonna keep on loving you
‘Cause it’s the only thing I wanna do
I don’t wanna sleep (don’t wanna sleep)
I just wanna keep on loving you
