Story Behind The Song
Released in 1985, “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” became the signature song of Simple Minds and one of the defining anthems of the 1980s. Recorded for the soundtrack to the coming-of-age film The Breakfast Club, the song was written by Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff rather than by the band themselves. Although Simple Minds were initially reluctant to record it, they were eventually persuaded, and the decision proved to be one of the most significant moments in their career.
Driven by Jim Kerr’s commanding vocal performance, Charlie Burchill’s soaring guitar work and an uplifting chorus, the song combines powerful rock instrumentation with an unmistakable sense of optimism and emotion. Its memorable “la, la, la” refrain has become one of the most recognisable audience participation moments in live music, ensuring the song remains a concert favourite decades after its release. The lyrics centre on remembrance, connection and the desire not to be forgotten, themes that perfectly complemented the film’s story.
The success of “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” introduced Simple Minds to an even wider audience and cemented their place among the biggest rock bands of the decade. Although they had already built an impressive catalogue, the song became their best-known recording and remains closely associated with both the band and The Breakfast Club. Today, it stands as one of the era’s greatest rock anthems, celebrated for its soaring melody, emotional power and enduring appeal.
The song peaked at No. 07 on the UK charts on 4th May 1985.

LYRICS
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ooh, woah
Won’t you come see about me?
I’ll be alone, dancing, you know it, baby
Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out, and
Love’s strange, so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on
Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby
Don’t you forget about me
Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t
Don’t you forget about me
Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down
Will you recognize me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down, down
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ooh, woah
Don’t you try and pretend
It’s my feeling we’ll win in the end
I won’t harm you or touch your defenses
Vanity, insecurity, ah
Don’t you forget about me
I’ll be alone, dancing, you know it, baby
Goin’ to take you apart
I’ll put us back together at heart, baby
Don’t you forget about me
Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t
Don’t you forget about me
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
When you walk away
Or will you walk away?
Will you walk on by?
Come on, call my name
Will you call my name?
I say, la, la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la, la, la-la, la-la, la-la, la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la, la, la-la, la-la, la-la, la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la, la, la-la, la-la, la-la, la
When you walk on by (La-la-la-la)
And you call my name (La-la-la-la)
When you walk on by
Written By Keith Forsey, Steve Schiff
