Story Behind The Song

Released in 1983, “Dear Prudence” became one of Siouxsie & The Banshees’ most successful and accessible singles. Originally written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney for The Beatles’ 1968 White Album, the song was transformed by the band into a shimmering, atmospheric recording that reflected their distinctive post-punk style. Produced by Mike Hedges, it appeared as a standalone single before later being included on some editions of the compilation album Once Upon A Time: The Singles.

Rather than simply recreating the original, Siouxsie & The Banshees reimagined “Dear Prudence” with bright, chiming guitars, layered synthesisers and a driving rhythm section. Siouxsie Sioux’s expressive vocal performance gives the song a cool elegance, while guitarist John McGeoch’s intricate playing adds a sparkling, melodic quality that became one of the defining features of the recording. The band’s arrangement balances the optimism of the original composition with the darker, more atmospheric sound for which they had become renowned.

“Dear Prudence” introduced many listeners to a different side of Siouxsie & The Banshees, proving they could reinterpret a classic song without losing their own identity. It became one of the standout recordings of their career and helped broaden their audience beyond the post-punk scene. Today, the song is regarded as one of the finest Beatles covers ever recorded, admired for its inventive arrangement, polished production and memorable performance. It remains a defining moment in the band’s catalogue and a favourite among fans of both artists.

The song peaked at No. 03 in the UK charts on 15th October 1983.

SONG LYRICS

Dear Prudence, won’t you come out to play?
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue
It’s beautiful, and so are you
Dear Prudence, won’t you come out to play?
Dear Prudence (Dear Prudence), open up your eyes
Dear Prudence (Dear Prudence), see the sunny skies
The wind is low, the birds will sing
That you are part of everything
Dear Prudence, won’t you open up your eyes?
Look around, ’round, ’round, ’round, ’round
Look around, ’round, ’round, ’round, ’round
Look around, ’round, ’round, ’round, ’round
Look around

Dear Prudence (Dear Prudence), let me see you smile
Dear Prudence (Dear Prudence), like a little child
The clouds will be a daisy chain
So let me see you smile again
Dear Prudence, won’t you let me see you smile?

Dear Prudence (Dear Prudence), won’t you come out to play?
Dear Prudence (Dear Prudence), greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue
It’s beautiful, and so are you
Dear Prudence, won’t you come out to play?

Look around, ’round, ’round, ’round, ’round
Look around, ’round, ’round, ’round, ’round
Look around, ’round, ’round, ’round, ’round
Oh, look around, look around, ah-ah-ah
Look around, ’round, ’round, ’round, ’round
Look around, ’round, ’round, ’round, ’round
Look around, around
Oh, look around, around
Look around, ’round, ’round, ’round, ’round

Written By John Lennon, Paul McCartney
