Story Behind The Song
Released in 1981, “Lately” was one of the most beautiful and emotionally intimate songs from Stevie Wonder’s album Hotter Than July. Written, produced and performed by Wonder, the song showcased his remarkable ability to create deeply personal soul music with an arrangement that remained understated and focused on the emotion of the lyric.
The song explores the painful uncertainty of a relationship that appears to be changing. The narrator senses that his partner may be falling for someone else and struggles with the fear of losing the person he loves. Wonder’s vocal performance is tender and vulnerable, gradually becoming more impassioned as the emotional tension builds. Piano, synthesiser, percussion and subtle backing vocals provide a restrained musical setting, allowing his voice and the words to remain at the centre of the recording.
“Lately” demonstrated the versatility of Hotter Than July, an album that also contained upbeat funk, reggae and pop influences. Its quiet, reflective character provided a striking contrast to some of the album’s more energetic material and highlighted Wonder’s extraordinary songwriting range. The album itself enjoyed a long and successful run on the UK Albums Chart, reaching number two.
Over the years, “Lately” has become one of Stevie Wonder’s most enduring ballads. Its honest portrayal of insecurity, heartbreak and fading love has given the song a timeless quality, while Wonder’s expressive vocal and elegant arrangement continue to make it a standout recording from the early 1980s.
It peaked at No. 03 in the UK Singles Chart on 11th April 1981.

LYRICS
Lately, I have had the strangest feeling
With no vivid reason here to find
Yet the thought of losing you’s been hanging
‘Round my mind
Far more frequently you’re wearing perfume
With you say, no special place to go
But when I ask, “Will you be coming back soon?”
You don’t know, never know
Well, I’m a man of many wishes
I hope my premonition misses
But what I really feel my eyes won’t let me hide
‘Cause they always start to cry
‘Cause this time could mean goodbye
Lately I’ve been staring in the mirror
Very slowly picking me apart
Trying to tell myself I have no reason
With your heart
Just the other night while you were sleeping
I vaguely heard you whisper someone’s name
But when I ask you of the thoughts you’re keeping
You just say nothing’s changed
Well, I’m a man of many wishes
I hope my premonition misses
But what I really feel my eyes won’t let me hide
‘Cause they always start to cry
‘Cause this time could mean goodbye, goodbye
Oh, I’m a man of many wishes
I hope my premonition misses
But what I really feel my eyes won’t let me hide
‘Cause they always start to cry
‘Cause this time could mean goodbye
