Story Behind The Song

Survivor’s “Eye Of The Tiger” is one of rock music’s most recognisable anthems, driven by a muscular guitar riff, a relentless rhythm and lyrics about determination, resilience and the refusal to give up. Released in 1982, the song was written specifically for the film Rocky III after Sylvester Stallone approached the American rock band to create a theme that would capture the fighting spirit of his celebrated boxing character.

Written by Survivor members Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan, the track was built around a distinctive palm-muted guitar figure that gives the opening an immediate sense of tension and anticipation. The steady drums and forceful bassline provide a powerful foundation, while Dave Bickler’s commanding vocals deliver the lyrics with conviction. The result is a recording that balances hard-rock intensity with an exceptionally memorable melody.

The title refers to the focused, instinctive determination needed to overcome adversity, drawing on the image of a tiger ready to confront its opponent. Within Rocky III, the song accompanies Rocky Balboa’s preparation to regain his confidence and fighting ability, making it an integral part of the film’s motivational atmosphere.

Beyond its cinematic origins, “Eye Of The Tiger” has become synonymous with perseverance and personal achievement. Its driving energy has made it a favourite at sporting events, in gyms and wherever an extra burst of motivation is needed. Decades later, its opening riff remains instantly recognisable, securing the song’s place among the defining rock recordings of the 1980s.

The song peaked at No. 01 in the UK singles chart on 4th September 1982.

SONG LYRICS

Risin’ up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive
So many times it happens too fast
You trade your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tiger

Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin’ tough, stayin’ hungry
They stack the odds till we take to the street
For the kill with the skill to survive

It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tiger

Risin’ up, straight to the top
Had the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I’m not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive

It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tiger

The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
